Does anyone have experience with someone entering info into Quick Books for them? I installed QuickBooks several years ago and was unable to operate it. I think it would save a lot of time at tax time.

My advice - Hire someone to help you with the setup. Quickbooks is designed to be used by laymen. It's necessary to set up things like the chart of accounts, invoicing, and other things correctly so that the underlying accounting data is right, but once that is done, the upkeep is straightforward. --71.97.xx.xxx

My accountant hooked me up with the book keeper who handles most of his clients inc/exp paperwork.

The lady is awesome and a very patient teacher. She say down with me and showed me how to do the grunt work, (weekly bill paying). Once I got everything set up, it's was a breeze. You just need to have someone show you how to do it. Pay them their rate and sit there and take notes. --50.32.xxx.xxx

Meant to say she SAT down with me. I don't even worry about balancing my checkbook anymore. I do my bills and send her an accountants copy and she verifies everything for me. --50.32.xxx.xxx

Emily has given you good advice. You can hire a book keeper, but you really need to understand your chart of accounts, p&l, balance sheet, and cash flow statement. It is the language of business. --72.172.xxx.xx

Once you have your chart of accounts set up and an understanding of how to write checks and record deposits in Quickbooks the rest is pretty simple. I second Emily's advice of paying someone to help you get it set up and teaching you the basics. If you're otherwise computer savy there are home-study courses you can buy specifically dealing with using Quickbooks for your real estate investments. --70.178.xx.xx

You can find someone on Fiverr to do this for minimal cost. I'm in between jobs and am freelancing and looked into Fiverr (their requirements to set up an account are cumbersome so I said forget it) and was checking out my potential competition. I saw several people offering this service.

Or, hire someone local if you want an ongoing relationship with someone close enough to visit. --71.97.xx.xxx

I use Quickbooks for payroll and QUICKEN for the rentals. My suggestion don't use the instructions that come with the program. Get the book by the persons using the product-- their set up is awesome and specific without need of an MIT masters degree to understand.

Do you have an accountant? If so they may have an office person who deals with these programs. You could ask your accountant to send them over to help set it up the way the accountant would like to see it each year-- they may not even charge for that-- to help you and THEM. --74.184.xxx.xx

I just started using QB 2016 this year. I wish I would have did this years ago! I called our CPA and she helped me for free. I bought my lap top and she set everything up .... When I run into issues I google it and click away :) --75.128.xx.xxx

Detra,

I use Quicken because it is much simpler than QuickBooks. Quicken has everything you need for paying the bills, logging in rent, and making monthly or year-end reports for tax purposes. KISS.

Look around your town for a small bookkeeping office or bookkeeping person. I have one who comes to my office and logs in all these things and pays the bills for a basic hourly fee. She already knows Quicken and QuickBooks and works a few hours per week keeping all her bills and tax information up-to-date. Small bookkeeping offices will often do these on a piece rate or maybe a monthly rate.

Paying for such service pays for itself very easily, mostly through reduced stress and better more accurate up-to-date info to run your business properly.
