Put Robert Ontario into the search box. One thing I've learned from MrLandlord is that two places to not own rentals are California and Ontario. The only place more favorable to tenants than California is Ontario. --70.16.xx.xx

I would suggest like anywhere visiting a landlord group and -listen- before asking questions, be aware of inspections - the court process as this is the most expensive and at the end of sometimes a crummy relationship, find the cost of legal fees and court costs. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Every month you must remit to the government 25% of the rent you collect. At the end of the year you file a Canadian tax and they will refund some money.

If you take a tenant to court you have no or slim chance to win, however if you complain that a tenant is not paying rent, you may be able to evict them in 6 or more months. The courts are very tenant friendly. They do have rent control, but you can set a new rent for a new tenant, but it is almost impossible to move out a tenant unless you want the unit for yourself or an immediate family member. After you deal with the Canadian landlord and tenant laws you really really appreciate the laws we have here in the United States.

Right now you have a 25% discount on Canadian real estate, but you also have a 25% discount on the rent you collect. --99.62.xxx.xxx

Bob, where in New York State do you live. Nellie from Maine has good suggestion, talk to Robert from the Toronto area , he seems to be well versed in the laws of Ontario. Now should be a good time to buy. The American dollar is worth about 30c more than the Canadian.Deposit the rent in Canadian Account, then when things stabilize, you know what to do,Eh! Their economy didn't tank like ours. Didn't go hog wild with their lending. Here they loaned to anyone who fogged a mirror. They should have been strung up. But no one did anything, except give them more money to do what they like with. PattyK, I lived in Ontario for a few years. They do serve fabulous lunches, especially if eating and watching the ships navigating through the Thousand Islands. You should take a trip up there, that is when the weather climbs out of the 0 Centigrade figures. Eh! Charlie............................j --70.215.xx.xx

Cjo'h CT

No, none of the peat moss. We do get natural gas piped from Nova Scotia, though. But it gets sold on the Boston Commodities market, so it is starting to spike in price because demand in New England is going up as it gets cold. New England basically has a NG shortage in the cold months. Converted 1 (luckily only 1) building to NG 2 years ago. Now I'm down to an oil price of 10 years ago. Argg, can't win on the energy cost front. --70.16.xx.xx

Suggest you go into a landlords website which is www.frpo.org then check out issues here. There is rent control, difficult landlord, tenant act and a government in Ontario who dislikes private ownership of rental units. We hope in the provincial electionn they finally throw out provincial government who is completely obvious to economic realities. In Ontario the rental housing is over 18 billion dollar industry which is larger then agriculture, arts and aerospace. --74.220.xxx.xxx
