State Specific Question About: FLORIDA (FL)

One of my units has a very discolored bathtub. Not sure what to do. 1. Should I just replace it? 2. Should I have an insert installed? 3. Should I have it refinished? I have heard that refinishing can cause a bad smell while they are doing it. I have also heard an insert can give you problems a few years down the road, cracking, water collection underneath, leading to mold, etc.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Many thanks. --71.180.xxx.xxx

I have had a few refinished. They have always used automotive enamal so the place will smell like a body shop for a day. I pay around $300 per tub and can get 6-8 years out of the refinishing. The last tub was in an occupied house, the tenant stayed with his girlfriend for a day to allow the smell to dissipate.

I have also replaced a few tubs, but that normally leads to at least a minor overhaul of the bathroom that runs $1,500 to $2,500. --132.244.xx.x

can you do your own work? if so here's a cheap fix for tub.

clean it first then lightly sand area to paint. wipe down with tack clothe. tape out upper area to keep off over spray. use white epoxy "appliance" spray paint from h depot.

use a light dusting of spray-- when it gets tacky spray a heaver coat.

Wear a long sleeve shirt and use particle mask. Put up a shower curtain. 300.00 no 20.00. --74.184.xxx.xx

A lot depends on ones skill. The most difficult part is removing the old tub. A new bathtub will cost anywhere from $150 to $300 depending on the type used. Most bathtubs are 60" long with either 30" or 32" width. Removing the old tub one can use a angle grinder with metal cutting blade or Sawzal with metal blade. Then it is matter of connecting the drain. If the old tub is removed then labour costs for a installing a new tub are a lot less. --74.220.xxx.xxx

It really isn't that bad to do yourself. Just did a tub here for under 100 dollars using the Sherman Williams kit. Cleaning and prepping the tub was the hardest part. Smell was no issue after a couple of days. --74.132.xxx.xx

fellow tinkerer's will agree- on most any job -- prep is the key and usually the hardest part of job.

You don't need any type of kit.

Appliance epoxy paint $8, light sand paper $1, tape $1, tack rag $2, dust mask $1.

If you think about it---- you usually only need to refresh the inside of the tube-- feather it in while spraying. --74.184.xxx.xx
