State Specific Question About: CALIFORNIA (CA)
Effective July 1, 2015, a new California law went into effect that all smoke alarms must be replaced with those that contain a sealed battery that is rated to last 10 years. We will be replacing the ones in the hallways, but are we supposed to include these smoke/carbon alarms in each bedroom as well? --67.181.xx.xx |

According to the CA state fire marshal, existing alarms do NOT need to be replaced if they work. --70.211.x.xxx |

At least twice a week I give thanks that we extracted from that horrible state.
I can't wait to move from where we are in AZ so I don't have to see Cali mountains in the distance. LOL --24.121.xxx.xxx |

Most cities around me have this idea, when they go bad the new style is the proper replacement, follow the way you have them now - if you have passed before. CO does not go together with smoke, such a goofy idea, read instructions carefully. --75.94.xxx.xxx |

An alarm in each bedroom and the hallway is required. Existing alarms are ok if within the recommended date time frame. --108.95.xx.xx |

Each City has it's own set of rules. Like in West Hollywird the aesthetics are more important then having a smoke detector in every important location.
But else where YOU SHOULD NOT USE A COMBINATION Smoke & C/O detector. If the battery or back up battery gets week and starts to chirp, you tenant will remove it and you'll have no protection.
If you own a single family home you can use the 10 year sealed lithium battery type. IN multi-unit properties you must have a hard wire smoke detector with a battery back up. Standard 9 volt at this time. C/O detector can be 10 year sealed battery or hard wire.
Please check your local codes.... Each day things may change. --173.55.xxx.xx |
