State Specific Question About: MASSACHUSETTS (MA)
My Mom's friend that rent in Framingham in a complex just informed me they are now going to start to charge tenants for water and sewer. Have the Massachusetts laws changed? --71.174.xxx.xxx |

Many of us in the rental housing industry are facing very large increases of cost of water, sewage charges where one has to pass the cost on to the users or cut the maintenance of the rental complex. In one of the apartment buildings the cost of water, sewage charges exceeds the cost of natural gas costs which is used for heat, hot water along with commercial heavy Laundromat natural gas coin clothes dryers. There are no positives here. So cutting repairs and maintenance is not a option. So as a tenant what is more fair. Going to a slum or continue with repairs and maintenance of the rental complex. If one owns their own house they face increases in water, sewage charges. Here the tenancy advocate chairs who are very critical of the private rental housing industry happen to own their own single family homes. Maybe instead of receiving close to a half million dollars at times would be interested in providing non-profit housing instead of thinking of themselves. The socialist live in a pie in the sky dream world where everything costs nothing and every works for nothing. Imagine tomorrow if one was living in town or city no one showed up for work. All the stores would be closed, no bus or taxi service where it would be ghost town. With the federal election on here the socialist party is promising us a dream world where problems go away along endless money for more socialist programs. Greece and Puerto Rico are what happens when one lives in a dream world. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

As far as I know, they can only begin charging for water & sewer at tenant turnover (and only if they've complied with all the state's requirements to do so). So I don't believe an existing in-place tenant can be told that they will be charged for water.
My own observation of large apartment complexes in MA is that they don't seem to place much importance on following state laws. I know of many complexes near me that charge pet deposits and do many additional things that are illegal in this state. --50.169.xx.xx |
