We have an old fiberglass tub in our own house we haven't gotten around to replacing yet. DH isn't even interested in re-doing the bath as it's our guest bath and we never use it.

I've always wondered what those Bath Fitter things (acrylic overlays for old tubs) cost. They won't quote you without coming to the house, and 'you both have to be there' (you know that type of sales call) but we bit the bullet and had a sales guy come out.

To remove the fiberglass tub and surround (can't put an insert over fiberglass, as it turns out. Wish they had told me THAT on the phone...) and replace with all new stuff, the price was seven thousand dollars ($7121, but we if bought "today" price save 10%.)

That's just for the tub. No other renovations.

We re-did the bath in this same house downstairs last year - gutted it and started over - and even hired the trades to do much of it (except lay the Allure floor) and it was no where close to that price.

We created a bathroom in a large bedroom a few years ago - again, hired the trades for most of it - and it was probably $5k including the somewhat pricey slipper tub.

I asked what it would be if we COULD install a overlay, and he said about $4k.

Wow. Well now we know. --173.22.xx.xx

I just replaced all the cast iron pipe in an old townhouse AND did a new bathroom from scratching (including demo of the floors, walls, pipes, tub) for $3100 including materials, supplies, labor, renting a UHaul to take things to the dump, etc. I helped facilitate the project, but had a plumber come put in the new pipes and hook things up and he had a crew handle the rest of the tasks.

When Bath Fitters quotes people that $7k number, they're looking for schmucks. They might even offer a "discount" down to $5k or $6 to lure some of them. LOL!!! For just a shower/tub? That is ___insane___. --73.191.xx.xxx

I had a quote for a overlay liner with new faucet, 5000 and they would discount the next unit (12 suites) if I put all on a timeline shorter than 4 months, I had to decline this great offer, I did 3 and each with a new tub - this allowed space to make wood repairs and do the 55 tile tub surround, cost of each was about a week of my labor and 500 materials that was new drain to the stack as well as new faucet.

If you are unsure they will keep plugging in numbers to get you to sign up... --75.94.xxx.xxx

I used to reglaze tubs on the side you could get the tub and the surround reglaze for about six to eight hundred dollars.

Bathfitters is a rip off you can buy a brand new tub and surround for a few hundred dollars. I'll know I'll tell you a million times over you might run into an issue with the flooring yada yada. --108.15.xxx.xx

Two years ago, I was taken by an ambulance to the hospital emergency room (auto accident). I got some X-rays and did not even see a real doctor. After 2 hours of observation, I was released and I walked out.

Two weeks later, I got a bill for my 2 hours in the ER for $5,500.00 !! Talk about a rip-off. Bath Fitters and my local hospital must be in bed with each other. At least Bath Fitters quotes you a price before they begin work. --68.63.xxx.xx

I'll agree that they are overpriced, for sure. My folks had two bathrooms done when in their early 80's, to improve access. I nearly hit the roof when I heard the price (somewhere around $10,000). BUT - I was extremely impressed by the final product. These guys did a top-notch job. --71.175.xxx.xxx

They probably finance it which is why folks pay, they don't have the cash so they make easy monthly payments for the next 20 years. --32.210.xxx.xxx
