Just a friendly comment about looking for churches to help. Please, direct them to some sort of public foundation. I have a relative, and also an old friend, who are pastors. You would not believe the parade of people who come through their offices, begging for help. Screening them to determine character and true need is difficult.

These churches do help people, but have learned to help people only through "referrals", so to speak, so that they are not throwing donated money after bad principles. Local social agencies are set up to efficiently screen and determine need, so please send them there. --71.185.xxx.xxx

Wilma, thanks for your comments. Our church has a steady stream of people coming in for handouts.

Yes, churches are supposed to be charitable, but they are also supposed to be diligent and wise with the monies entrusted to them.

Some of the same DBs who stop by your place and ask for applications make the rounds of the churches every month.

Our church gives to the local needy through United Ministries. It's there specifically to provide a cushion between the givers and the receivers. And it allows the givers to designate just how much they are giving each month without negotiation.

I suggest you find the equivalent of United Ministries in your town. It's very likely there. --141.129.x.xx

I'm sure this is an old joke to many here, but there's the story of the church business meeting:

A church member stood and told the congregation "I know a poor single mother who will be tossed on the street by her heartless LL if the rent is not paid this week."

The moderator says "that's terrible! Who is this heartless person?"

The man says "that would be me, the LL." --141.129.x.xx

Our church used to have this and they quit doing this because the same people coming back every month and they could only do it one time per family and they kept a list of people names and if they came back a second time and a third time they would have to them no. They had one lady coming there every month with het telephone( landl line) with a $200 dollars or more a month and wanting the church to pay it evey month they would keep telling her no. --72.198.xx.xx

Mary,

Call some churches in the area and ask.

Our city has an agency of combined churches to control the gifts and minimize people scamming...er...hitting up every church for the same problem.

If your res needs this for rent, it's too late and time to evict.

These agencies might help a little or MAYBE one month, but your res still has the same problem.

Do your res a favor and help them leave before the hole gets deeper. --67.175.xx.xxx

Gevans, Brad - thanks for the info about the possibility of a combined churches agency. I'll pass it on to my relative, and my church benevolence committee. That sounds like an excellent solution. --71.185.xxx.xxx

I fill up an empty if I have one around the holidays for visiting families, church pays the gas/electric. For me it is good advertising the empty place and how good our places are, we get scouts to carry in/out the furniture leftover from rummage sales the girl scouts clean our places sometimes and the boy scouts do lawncare. --75.94.xxx.xxx
