State Specific Question About: MASSACHUSETTS (MA)

Whats a good way to provide soundproofing to a door? The door is already solid core, and I have added a sweep and insulation strips on the perimeter of the door. I think I have to increase the thickness of the door somehow. Some have suggested hanging a carpet, but I don't know what else may work. --173.0.x.xxx

Hope to hear others respond. All I can say is that from my audiophile days, egg crate and foam "sound absorbers" will not work. They attenuate reflections into the room but don't stop sound transmission thru the door.

Perhaps try using the heavy rubberized stuff they use in car stereo installations. It supposedly damps vibration and road noise. --137.79.xxx.xx

It's fairly simple to add a second solid core door. Shrinks use this trick, quite often. --173.48.xxx.xxx

Carpeting on the floor and drapes on the windows can absorb a lot of sound. Also this is why I don't use anything except w to w carpet.

I have some foam egg crate stuff on my front door in the winter since it has panels and conducts cold really well. It does stop sound pretty well as I can't hear my dogs bark from outside. It's the same stuff that is used with bedridden people to make the bed softer and prevent bedsores.

Too many questions not asked. Are you sure the sound is going through the door? There are many ways for sound to get out of or into a room and the door is only one. Also what kind of sound are you wanting to stop. Foot falls or voices. Are there air ducts? What about wall outlets?

Impact noise - foot falls - travel through the structure so the only way to stop them is with isolation. Something has to break the path of the vibration through the structure.

Airborne noise - voices - travels through the air. Think of it like water. Think of filling the room up with water and imagine how the water would leak out and that's how airborne sound escapes. It goes through the wall at electrical outlets. Airborne sound can go through items with low mass. For example single pane glass. I have found sound travel between units in a building by going through one window and back in the other.

Now to your question. If you are sure the door is the issue. You can add an extra layer of sound proofing sheet rock to the inside and outside. Keep in mind this adds significant weight. You can also use green glue (google it), between the door and the sound proofing sheet rock. Regular sheet rock helps but not as much as the special stuff. Regular silicon caulk can be substituted for the green glue. Again the results are diminished.

I have done a good bit of research on this. It is very very hard to do sound proofing on an old structure. The most effective way is to design it into the building. After the building is in place you can make it better but it's not cheap and the results are not great. --75.160.xxx.xxx

Seal all the outlets, switches, plumbing passageways, hollow core door would make sense to me - cancel the drum effect by not transmitting straight thru. --75.94.xxx.xxx
