I ask if they make more than X. X is something less than what they put on the application and something more than 3X rent. I have not had an employer not reply. I usually talk to a supervisor instead of HR. Go for their supervisor and I let them know right off it's for an apartment. Usually works unless it's a big company. --75.160.xxx.xxx |

I'm with Ally. I always get the paystub. In fact I like to get several paystubs. I stopped trying to get this info from employers years ago, a company of any size always seem to resist it.

I once had a boyfriend/girlfriend situation where both claimed to work for the same company but were hired at different times. Despite that, their pay stubs showed EXACTLY the same pay, same hours taken for vacation and sick leave, etc..
Upon closer examination (geeze, I felt like a detective!) you could see where one name had been whited out (hers) and his put in instead.
In addition, keep in mind that Craigslist is full of ads offering (for a fee) to come up with fake pay stubs to fool landlords into believing applicants have stable jobs.

You could ask for pay stubs (I ask for last three) and since there are scammers out there, you could then call the employer and simply ask "Can you verify that applicant makes X dollars per week/month/year?". Hopefully they can at least answer yes or no to that question. --12.32.xx.xxx |

When there is no pay stub or bank statement, here's how I get around employers who won't tell you what applicant's income is. Let's call our applicant Sally.
First, most employers WILL tell you whether or not Sally works there and what her position is and how long she's worked there. Step 1 done.
Step 2, I chat with HR person for a minute and establish a good rapport. I tell them how much I am looking forward to renting to Sally, but I do need to know she can afford the place. Then my spiel..."I understand you have certain rules and privacy to respect and I don't want you to get in trouble. So, how about this? We've established that Sally has worked for your company for 2 years as a Assistant Director of Payroll. She said her income is $2500 per month. Let's not talk about Sally for a minute. Would you say $2500 is a reasonable salary for someone with the same position, experience and time on staff as Sally?"
9 times out of 10 I will get the answer I need. My hypothetical situation seems to put them at ease that I'm not a scammer or Govt tester. Frankly, I don't think the Govt testers are smart enough to come up with a scenario like I did.
But really, this is all unusual. Most folks at big companies get a bi-weekly pay stub and/or have a bank statement they can provide. Smaller employers usually just tell me what I need to know without me even sending them a copy of the signed release to verify Sally's info. --108.250.xxx.xxx |

Sid, I'm surprised you have to beat around the bush like that. I have NEVER failed to get a salary verification. It's quite straight forward, tell them its for a rental application and you have a signed consent form. Worst case I've had to use a third party site. --108.226.xx.xxx |
