State Specific Question About: MASSACHUSETTS (MA)
Are self cleaning ovens good for multifamily? I have a 4 family, each unit about 800 sqft. and I'm wondering if the self-cleaning oven will set off the fire alarms. I have NON-self cleaning ovens now but need to start replacing them. --24.181.xxx.xxx |

We have a self-cleaning oven at our own home. We never use it because seldom does anything get spilled.
We have a couple of self-cleaning ovens at rentals because we bought them used and they just happened to have that feature. However, we almost always have to clean appliances upon move-out regardless if the ovens have self-cleaning feature or not. I do not see it setting off the smoke alarm/detectors because there is not alot of smoke like there is when they burn the bacon. --72.214.xxx.xxx |

Self cleaning must still be cleaned after tenants. It's just much easier. I only buy self cleaning ovens. --75.160.xxx.xxx |

I would recommend self cleaning ovens. Just give tenants a sheet on how to use the feature at move in. They can be damaged if a tenant sprays cleaner in there and then turns the self cleaning feature on....or if they leave the racks in, or anything on the stovetop while its cleaning. Train them right from the start, and self cleaners will help you and your tenants!

We use them. But have a small section in the lease on how to use them. They can get to something like 1100 degrees on self cleaning. Had a tenant leave an oven safe glass baking dish in one while on self cleaning. Dish not made for cleaning temps. So blew out the glass in the oven door and started kitchen cabinet on fire. --76.104.xxx.xx |

No, I would avoid self cleaning ovens.
I would argue that feature is a major factor as to why ovens go bad. When you use that, the oven gets way hotter than it usually does. And, that very high temp mixed with circuitry, is going to be a bad match in the long run.
The self cleaning feature should be okay if you're only using it rarely. But, people overuse it by using it to regularly clean their oven.

I have some in campus places, they do make it easier to clean up, tenants seldom do it. --75.94.xxx.xxx |

Too hot and dangerous for the reasons mentioned above in a few posts. Tenants do not read instructions or remember instructions or follow instructions. That's why they are tenants mostly.

In the apartment buildings when replacing stoves only buying self cleaning models. Have not had many problems with the self cleaning ovens. 30" stoves are very common along with being easy to buy used as when home owners up grade to stainless steel the white appliances are sold. Have not had a problem with smoke alarms or central fire alarm system going off. The only problem with self cleaning oven is the gasket on the oven should not be touched as the gasket is fragile along being expensive to replace. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

rlm,
Have you ever tried cleaning an oven???
We ONLY buy self cleaning.
Reduces my turnover expense and prospects expect the feature.
DO NOT use spray cleaners on self cleaning oven surfaces!!
Can you even buy a non-self cleaner these days? Older appliances are shunned by Momma when she picks the new house.

I have self cleaning ovens in a few units. I have found the tenants never use this feature anyway. I am the person who ends up having to clean the oven on turnover and the feature is very useful. I don't think most tenants can be relied upon to properly use a self cleaning oven and I have seen a tenant set off a smoke detector in a large condo building while using a self cleaning oven. --70.27.xxx.xxx |

Ps My housekeeper was soooo thankful when we stopped installing non-self-cleaning ovens.
Now she starts her turnover cleaning routine by flipping on the self cleaning oven then doing her work.
We like happy housekeepers! They do a better job! --67.175.xx.xxx |

I like a self-cleaning oven. It still needs cleaning after it goes through the cycle, but much less, and cleanup is much easier. --24.130.xx.xx |
