State Specific Question About: DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (DC)

Hello all,

Looking for a price range for pet deposit. Also, would like to know if extra monthly fees are charged or just the deposit. My experience is that with the limitation in DC to charge an amount equal to the monthly rent or less as security deposit, one ends up spending more to cover cost of damages than the deposit received.

I welcome your comments/responses.

DCcool

Charge a non-refundable pet registration fee of $150. Here it varies from $100-$300 per pet. Once you collect the fee then you don't have to worry about SD limits. --75.160.xxx.xxx

We charge Pet Rent instead of a 'deposit'. If they pay a deposit they think if their pet does no damage they should get it back. We say, "for the privilege of having the pet, you pay $25 more per month.' --50.82.xxx.xxx

I consulted our LL-tenant association about a pet deposit or non-refundable pet fee. They reported that for my county the fee (they will not let you charge a fee) or deposit becomes a part of the security deposit and is treated the same. It is ok to charge monthly pet rent which was good to hear. Some LLs use a below the knee and above the knee to set the fee/deposit and or pet rent for dogs. With a fee it could be $150 below and $300 above or $300 below and $500 above - it is up to you. I think most of the pet rents are $25 per pet as you can see from the above posts. --108.51.xx.x

I appreciate all your responses. I will charge the pet "fee" and monthly rent, though I still think it will not cover damages that a dog will most likely incur. Better than having them bring the pet in illegally, I suppose.

Thanks again. --71.163.xxx.xxx
