State Specific Question About: ILLINOIS (IL)
Here in Illinois, power companies can't shut you off for non payment until April 15. I think it is some kind of child protection law. So one of my tenants called me wanting to " borrow" a generator because she got all gas and elect shut off. Number 1, I don't have a Gen set, #2 I wouldn't give to her. So now she and her BF don't have lights, heat or hot water. Power company said they need $230 just to get current before they restore power. Both of them are on SSI and won't see any cash until 5/03, that's 18 days from now. And rent is due then also. So my question is this. Can I serve them because they lost power? I don't want see them lighting and heating the place with candles and open flames. Local city code states every home shall have heat and water at all times. So any ideas? There are no kids involved. They are both mid 40's and I think they are users. --98.223.xxx.xxx |

Evict. Paying the utilities will, to them, be more important than paying you. And they apparently cannot pay both those plus the rent after their higher spending priorities exhaust their funds.

Gary,
They are living beyond their means - they simply cannot afford to live there. They might have been good earlier, but not everyone can keep it up.
My financial aide agency director pleads with our LL assoc every year to NOT let people fall behind. We are NOT doing them any favors letting them get deeper and deeper. Her agency cannot help when they are behind.
