Ok so paid for new roof less than a year ago. Now approx 9 months later got a serious leak. Had our handyman check it out, major water damage! And he said the back part of the roof is not up to code i.e., there was no 'membrane' put under shingles on the back of the house with a 1.5 pitch (pretty flat). Roofer gave us 5 year warranty but has been a bit slack about going to look. We're giving him a chance to correct this. But what kind of inspector can give us a report with details of whats wrong with the roof if needed for court? Any other thoughts/comments are appreciated.

The State of NC does not license roofers-- so no help there. Some cities in NC "require" a permit for each roofing job, but there is no inspection nor penalty for not having a permit. --67.213.xx.xx |

1.5 pitch is way too flat for shingles. I am guessing by 'membrane', he meant ice/water shield. Still too flat even with this installed.
If he will not respond, I would get someone to tear the shingles off and install something like Tamko AWA or Certainteed GMS roofing material. Contact a roofing material wholesale place, such as ABC Supply and ask them for a reputable company to do the work.
My guess is that this area is just an add on and not too large an area so should not run into too costly of a lesson. --174.70.xxx.xxx |

3 in 12 is minimum for shingles. Rubber roof will only last ~5-8 years. Reslope the roof if possible. --64.203.xxx.xxx |
