Wow, have OSB prices ever gone through the roof (not just up on a roof). I hope I don't have a roof tear off including new sheathing needed.

I bought two sheets of 7/16 inch OSB at HD yesterday. They no longer post a price nor have any labels on the sheets.

When the cashier told me what my bill was, I asked to see it as I was sure it must be a mistake. It was $12.77 per sheet.

I haven't had to buy shingles for almost three years, but I know those are way up also.

Many years ago, during the Iraq war and pre Chinese Olympics, a majority of building materials were being sent to Iraq to re-build because of the war and China had a demand for raw materials too.

Prior to all of this I got an estimate to re-roof an old SFR built in 1907 by a professional licensed roofing company. The house was pitched and had wood singles, it needed to be stripped and have osb applied before new shingles could be installed. The

quote for stripping, new osb wood, felt and a 25 year shingles -- total $4000.

During the Chinese olympics and Iraq rebuild, the same house to re-roof estimate was $7000, that's 75% more!

Now that things have continued to rise with basic costs (insurance, wages, rent, etc.), the roof ended costing $5,600 last month.

So yes, osb has gone sky high 400% rise in cost during the IRAQ war, drop and then go up again. --173.55.xx.xxx

If the roof has one layer of shingles along with roof being structurally sound then price out a steel roof. With a steel roof it is matter of installing 1"/2" wood strapping then bolting the steal panels right into roof. A steel roof is stronger and will outlast shingles. Without having to tear up the shingles then cost may only be slightly higher. In the apartment buildings and house which have a gable roof went with steel. At the home depot pick up some brochures about steel roofs then compare. The only disadvantage with a steel roof is one is going to need snow ice bars as steel does not hold ice or snow which slides right off the roof. When one drives around one sees more and more houses having a steel roof. The straight steel panels come in three different levels of thickness. From light to commercial. In a lot places people have done things the old way when things change there are better products out there. --216.110.xxx.xx

Robert, I am not actually having a roof done now. I was just thinking I was glad I didn't.

I grew up in a town where many houses had metal roofs. They lasted for many, many years. --70.255.xxx.xxx

During the economic downturn, I could buy OSB for less than $5/sheet. The manufacturing plant is less than 75 miles from my house.

I considered purchasing a full bundle just for a rainy day, but decided against it.

Another lost opportunity... prices are indeed going through the roof! --141.129.x.xx

When the price did go down I got a bundle for $4.50 each. Knew we were gonna remodel our house. When we did remodel it was up to $8.00. --98.94.xx.xxx
