I was reading a few posts about pests and boric acid.

Does anyone know if boric acid has an expiration date? I have some boric acid powder that's about 3 or 4 years old, but the container doesn't say if it loses its effectiveness over time, or if it has an expiration date.

Thanks for any info!!

Boric acid, by itself, does not expire unless the temperature rises above 200 degrees. Kept in a cool, dry place it last forever. --205.188.xxx.xxx

Boric acid is a fine powder that is an abrasive for the hard shells of the insects. When the shells are scratched, they lose moisture. So it never expires from age. If it gets wet, it clumps and no longer works to scratch their adorable little exoskeletons. --67.233.xxx.xxx

Although boric acid can scratch the "shells" (exoskeleton) fo insects this is not it's mode of action. It and doitomaceous earth work because of their physical structure. They are sharp and cut the soft tissue between the exoskeleton plates. This allows the hemolympy (bug blood) to leak out. Thus, they "bleed" to deaty and desicate. --69.221.x.xxx

Thank you, Kathy, for that explanation. I was taught that it was cuts in the exoskeleton, but it being cuts in the tissue makes more sense.

I use a mixture of boric acid and food grade DE, and I've never known if there is any real difference between the two. But I bought a 20 pound bag of the mix, and it lasts a LONG time.

Where do you purchase the DE and boric acid? --64.222.xxx.xx

Just grind it up after it is clumped up, the finer the chop the more they can drag home to the colony. Just look in dollar general or a mom-pop hardware, flea collars and gel bait will make you a insect killer for many varieties. --64.134.xxx.xxx

V, you often mention grinding the DE. I am guessing that you buy the swimming pool filter DE. They sell "food grade" DE which is already ground to a baby powder grind, no need to grind it yourself.

Ellen, I got my bag in a local feed store. But they also have a DE product at Home Depot, a four pound bag.

I bought a pair of plastic bottles, ketchup and mustard, at the 99 Cent Store, and filled them with the stuff -- that was a bit messy. (I used butcher paper to fashion a funnel with a mouth as wide as the ketchup bottle.) Then, I use the bottles as dust blowers.
