I have decided to make an access to my flat roof on my 17 unit building. I have selected an area in one of our storage closets for the access.
I have made all the initial framing drilled my pilot holes in the 4 corners, and now I need to cut through approx. 4 inches of layered tar paper , roll roofing, tar, ect. My sawzall blade just gums up immediately and a utility knife will take forever, does anyone know how to cut this or what to cut it with? any ideas would be appreciated.
Oh, and there is a chance for rain Friday. It hasn't rained here in 3 months... It will rain Friday!

Never done that but two thoughts.
1. Use the coarsest blade. The larger teeth might not gum up.
2. Use a very fine toothed blade which will gum up but since the teeth are small it won't hold much material and you can force it to cut by pushing against the material.
Another thought would be to use the tip to cut part way through all the way around and then peal off a couple of layers. Repeat until complete. --75.160.xxx.xxx |

First of all I hope the location you choose is on the High Side of the Roof, not near a drain or down spout!
Second, I would use a large tooth sawzall blade designed for wood and asphalt. When the blade gets gummed up, use a utility knive and scrap off any stuck on tar. It may take two or three blades to complete your task.... --173.55.xx.xxx |

If there is no tin I would consider using a cheap electric chain saw,I use them to cut up garages when I take one down then just throw away the saw but in this case it would probably survive and just need a new chain --72.224.xx.x |

Might be a good idea to call a roofing Company that specializes in Flat roofs and ask them what they use for such a job. I'd offer to pay them to come and cut the whole for me. I acn just imagine what a mess 4 inchs of old tar is. --108.238.xxx.xxx |

Go slow with the sawzall, start and stop, start and stop. This will prevent heat buildup from friction, which is what is casuing the gumup. No "quick and easy" way to do this (that I know of.) Might be better to do the job on a cold day in Winter when the tar is brittle. --70.192.xxx.xx |

I was going to say that. Start early in the morning and keep the material cold.
If you know where you are cutting from the top, you will have better luck with an old circular saw. It will also gum up but it has the muscle and the teeth are huge in comparison to the reciprocating saw blades.

if you are cutting down words use a very hot blade. essentially melt the cut line with a very hot course blade. You may need to do it in layers. John New Jersey. --174.226.xxx.xxx |

No matter how you do it cutting thru this much old T&G roofing is a messy hard job. We usually scrape off all the stone then use an old cement siding blade (only have 5 or 6 teeth) in a skill saw to cut thru the built up asphalt. If you haven't figured out a way to cut it B/4 Friday' rain either fill the holes / cuts with some Geocel caulking or build a 2x4 frame around the opening. Use Geocel under and around the frame then cap with a piece of plywood until the weather improves. Companies like Harvey Industries & ABC Supplies sell metal access hatches with a premade roof curb for installations like this. Make sure that you keep the roof curb high enough so that water won't come in if there is a build up of snow on the roof. --151.203.xxx.xxx |

Why not wait until you're doing a tear-off/reroof of the flat roof?
Then your roofing co can worry about putting in a curb and making sure it doesn't leak. That's what I often do if the building doesn't already have roof scuttle access. Last time I did this the building had a back porch/balcony so that the hole was put over that rather than in the tenants living space.

Keep ice water flowing on the coarse blade to prevent heating/clogging, withdraw the sawzall and make the blade sing - the swarf will flick off like boogers on a 6 year olds finger. --64.134.xxx.xxx |
