Is there a way to send a 1099 to a handyman for money he stole? I filed a police report, but I don't expect anything to come of that since the guy took off to New York. I don't have his ss #, but would like to stick it to him if possible.

If you can get your local people to issue a warrant it'll be entered into the national data base then one of these days he'll be pulled over for some traffic issue, when they run 28/29 it'll come up and he'll go to jail. --108.238.xxx.xxx

I think you would need a SS # in order to effectively 1099 him.

You likely also need proof he stole the money. Just knowing it is not good enough. --141.129.x.xx

please teach us, how does the handyman steal the money? Help us keep one step ahead of these guys!

I try to keep a close guard of all finances which we handle off site, keys to the laundry machines are handled on by me, no cash stored on site, etc.

How much are we talking about? --24.18.xxx.xxx

My handywoman stole my check book 2 years ago and wrote almost 5K in checks to herself, her daughter, and some men unknown to me. She also altered a thirty dollar check that I wrote to her to $80.00. Although I made a police report the prosecutor did nothing because the bank made me whole.

Lots o' luck. --69.221.x.xxx

You CAN send a 1099 without SS#. The IRS will get it and MIGHT link it to him.

It MIGHT get bounced back as incomplete.

I CAN file in small claims and it will linger on the public court records and show on his credit report! and interfere with his auto insurance, getting a car loan, job applications, etc.

Don't need a Soc for that. --50.129.xxx.xxx

$1600. He collected the security deposit and first month's rent from a tenant and took off to NY. Gevans, just curious, but for what reason do I need proof that he stole it..for issuing 1099? I do have proof of this as the tenant has the receipts, plus the handyman told me had it and was telling me a story in order to stall before he took off. It was cash, so I can't do much about it.

I don't think filing in small claims would do much except cost me more money since he is in NY now, and uses other people to get by without auto insurance and normal things that most people need. I don't even know if filing a 1099 would affect him as he may not file tax returns. I am just looking for an effective way to mitigate my loss. --174.59.xxx.xx

You can file without proof, but he can sue you (successfully) if you don't have the proof.

Sounds like a non issue for you as you DO have proof. --141.129.x.xx
