I had a resident move out after about six years that was the decorative type. Anyway, she did some painting, and unfortunately painted over about half of the wood cabinets in the kitchen. The cabinets are hardwood with dark varnish from 30 years ago but they look excellent unpainted. Is there any way to easliy remove the paint or do I just swallow my pride and bite the bullet, and just paint all of the cabinets now? The paint that was used was water-based. I think I am up the creek (or crick depending on where you are from). Thanks! --24.136.xxx.xxx |

Why wouldn't you charge her for unauthorized painting? --75.36.xxx.xx |

Ask the tenant to remove the paint or did you agree to this, if it was just one day ago warm water and detergent will help if the paint has cured really well it is gonna leave a mark on the deposit - prolly a big one, get estimates now - chances are the doors can be removed and soaked or stripped down and then you only have to strip the stiles and frames where the stripper drains down fast, get good protection for the countertop. --76.241.xxx.xxx |

I believe I'd get a quote from a Kitchen Cabinet refinishing company for returning the cabinets to their original state and take it out of their SD and bill for what's not covered. --108.220.xxx.xxx |

A hot steam bath will help remove paint but not sure about the varnish. --75.162.xxx.xx |

Formby's paint striper is an
excellect product with low odor to
remove paint. I think the water
base paint would be easier to remove
the oil base paint.
I used this on an entire bathroom door
with beautiful dark wood under the layers
of white paint, it came out very well but
was a lot of work. Get a small can of Formby's, follow directions, test it out on a small area of the door of one of the cabinets.
If it comes off easy I would strip them and charge the tenant for your labor and supplies to do the job.

Am I the only one that sees an enormous amount of work for no reason?
I would now have white cabinets. Personally I think the dark varnish 30 year old cabinets are ugly anyway. --99.45.xxx.xxx |

The dark wood of the cabinets hides
dirt and finger prints. Lots of
people still like the dark wood.
