State Specific Question About: VERMONT (VT)
One of my tenants is a gun owner. He uses it to do target practice, but when I went to do a home inspection, I saw it out lying on a table, which was kind of a shock. I imagined it would be locked away in a closet.
What are the laws regarding this? I think he seems a responsible person, and this is a rural area so I can understand he might feel the need for self protection, but I am also concerned about how the other tenants would feel, they have young children
Advise anyone? --71.169.xxx.xxx |

Well, the other tenants kids would hopefully not hve full run of the property and walk into just anyone apartment.
BUT, now you know he has one and be very cautious when your going to enter for an inspection. --12.54.xxx.x |

I advise you to mind your own business . Did it concern you that he might have a large kitchen Knife lying on the counter ?? in 1980 out of 21800 murders 5886 people were killed by blunt objects like baseball bats, fists and rocks strangled with things like rope and bare hands and stabbed and cut with things like knives, razors and broken beer bottles. Histrionics and misplaced "concerns" are part of a problem rather than a solution to your perceived problem . I find it ironic that Vermont being in what was the cradle of democracy is now in the cradle of state-ism and witch hunting.
what are you wanting to do, rat this guy out ?? --108.220.xxx.xxx |

I think you should be happy to have a responsible, armed person living in the building, otherwise mind your business,he still has a right to own it in this country --72.224.xx.x |

hello, i believe that vt state is a very liberal one. I happen to be a veteran and a licenced pistol holder. so back off!!! it's none of your business!! it is the tenants premises and his right "to keep and bear arms" as quaranted by the US Constitution!! --67.247.xxx.xx |

I agree with the right to bear arms.
BUT is it your house, raise the rent to compensate you or evict to get possession and he goes away.
I wonder if this be in the same category as pets and smoking.
$200 gun fee, and a lease clause "all guns must be kept in safe at all times" and "tenant hold landlord harmless if shot by or shoots someone"
In NY only the criminals have guns, don't need the clause.

@ K[MN]: Maybe in MN, "any moron can own a gun," but in most states, there are laws that prohibit morons and other mental incompetents from possessing firearms. --71.49.xxx.xxx |

Right now, I have a pistol on my desk, in plain sight, because it is more comfortable for me to have it on my desk then on my belt.
It will remain on my desk until I leave the office this evening, at which time it goes back onto my belt.
I don't understand this post.
CJ, dry out your panties and get a life.

I don't think there's a problem if a tenant has guns. Now, if he also has bullets that's a different story! :) --174.29.xxx.xxx |

CJ...you have the right to evict on a month to month for "no cause". You also have the right to require him to keep the guns locked. Why not tell him of your concerns & see what he says. --68.126.xxx.xx |

Why get all uptight? Seemed like an honest question.
If I walked into a few friend's houses I would also be very surprised to find a gun on the table. Even if the friend was home on the other end of the house. These are some real pros and museum level collectors that take no chances and have surgeon like protocols for what to do when cleaning a gun and the phone rings.
In this case, I would not mention or do a thing. I simply don't care enough. What he shoots, and who may get shot by accident is all boring to me.

It's safe to say that most tenants probably have a gun in their home. LL's just never see them. When we rent the home, the tenant has the right to do anything he wants as long as he breaks no laws or covenants.
So, you saw the gun, just move on and don't worry about it.
Yes, some morons own guns. But the majority of gun owners are very responsible. I'd write more, but I need to clean my gun!

Another reason to use autodraft rather than collect rents! AND to keep your personal life private. You never know what's in the head of your residents or the applicants you turned down.
I understand your surprise, but it's nothing to be concerned about. ME? I'd ask to see the gun and hold it!
If we knew everything that went on inside our rentals, we'd never sleep at night!

It is legal to own a gun in most part of the states as long as you have a clean background. I assume you checked his background when he moved in so what's the problem? I have a lady LL friend who would not go to her rentals without a gun.
It's like having a power tool at home. It can kill too.
I like guns and I keep them hidden so I know where they are, not the person walking into my house. --198.51.xxx.xxx |

The city of Chicago spent a substantial sum trying to keep guns out of their residents hands. I doubt you or your insurance company are going to do any better. Putting that in a lease or charging extra is just inviting a lawsuit.
My guess is that the farthest you could go is request that he lock it up IF the local laws require it. You may want to contact a VT gun rights organization for this info.
Overall your community is safer with more responsible gun owners; consider that if he owns illegally he probably would not leave it lying out (though there are a bunch of stupid criminals out there). --75.140.xxx.xxx |

as long as rental unit is secure, then safety of others is not an issue.
one other aspect is theft - if tenant is leaving guns out in plain view(vs in a safe, etc), someone may break in to steal the gun. Guns, drugs, money - all attract thieves.

Around here, we just assume everyone has a gun. If they don't, they are too embarrassed to say so.
It's still a free country... sort of. We still have an ammendment on the right to bear arms.
I grew up with a shotgun on the rack in my dad's pickup truck... and he never locked the truck. --141.129.x.xx |
