usps po box address (by sunny [CA]) Posted on: Jun 26, 2012 7:29 PM

this is a dumb question, but i can't seem to find the answer anywhere...

i have a new usps po box- for all business related mail but i'm not sure how to correctly write my new usps po box address.

is this the correct way?

ex: my name

usps post office address

po box xxxx

city, state, zip

other examples online show just po box number with no street address, others addressed: usps (no st address) followed w/ po box.

i tried to include both usps address and po box but it wouldn't take.

i live in los angeles with a lot of usps locations

I believe I would write it this way:

John Doe

PO BX 111

Street address of Post office

Your town, State , zipcode

My collection atty writes his this way:

Law Office of Perry mason

His Office street Address

PO BX 111

Coffeyville, Kanasas , zip code

Either send yourself a letter addressed as above to see if you get it or ask your Postmaster. --108.220.xxx.xxx

Is this the correct way? I don't think so.

The best thing to do is to go to the PO where your box is and get it from them. The addy will vary depending on the physical location of the PO. --108.218.xxx.xx

So not put your street address if you want mail to go to the po box.

Attorney MUST HAVE A STREET ADDRESS for legal service of client documents so that is not a good example --184.5.xxx.xxx

The USPS leaves me a bill in my box. It has my address printed on it the way they want to see it. The address does not include the street address of the post office. The zip code and box number gets it to the correct building. --199.61.xx.xxx

Just to note it to avoid confusion -- what Ferraro said about the zip code is only accurate for his particular post office. This varies greatly by post office and the number of boxes that they offer. (Here, for example, the 5-digit zip code is completely unrelated to the POBoxes -- and the last 4 are just your box number -- such as 30303-0123 for box number "123".)

Also, it should be noted that most Post Offices have JUST started offering an option where you can use their street address -- and can now even get packages from UPS and FedEx -- but you need to sign up to use that option.

So, for most POBoxes, it should be like this:

Your Name

P.O. Box 123

Your city, ST 30303-0123

(And, again, how the zip code is written is something you'll want to check with your local post office about.)

...and then the NEW street address option, once you sign up, would look like this:

Your Name

Street Address of your Post Office

#123

Your city, ST 30303-0123

Note that they specifically say that you can use something like "Suite 123" or "Apt. 123" when doing the physical address thing. You can just put the number by itself or do "#123" or do "Box 123" -- but nothing that implies that it is a specific office or apartment in a building. I don't think that they will enforce this much, actually, but that is what the agreement says. Just FYI.

Ditto what John [MI] said.

John Doe

P.O. Box 123

City, State

Zip + Four

Unless it is under some new program that I was not aware of, there is never a need to put the post office street address on the envelope. The zip code tells the Post Office which post office location your PO Box is at.

@Reid: As you noted, your atty uses HIS office address, not the Post Office's street address, in his address. That is for messenger delivery, Fed Ex and the like. Anything mailed to him will go to the P.O. Box; anything messengered will go to the street address.
