Living room carpet at my rental house has cigarette burns, stains, and is just plain dirty. I don't want to replace the carpet just yet, as roughly 85% of the carpet is fine. So I'm looking for budget tips for restoring or covering up a haggard carpet. Rent a wet vac? Douse it in chemical cleaners? Just don't suggest a new carpet. As I said, not feasible at the moment. --71.172.xxx.xx |

Here , look at the Rug Doctor Site and read what they have to say. I've used their rental machines and chemicals with excellent results in the past. You can usually rent these machines at grocery, hardware and Dollar stores. It's worth a try.

If it's nylon carpet, you can dye it a darker color to cover the stains. You can even DIY with Rit and a pump sprayer. --97.127.xx.xx |

SUPER clean it, then buy a cheap but nice THROW RUG (big 'un) to cover most of the damage.
Make sure it's clean first though. --72.66.xx.xxx |

After you clean it you can use a razor to shave up some carpet fibers from a closet or some where hidden, Then dab super glue in the cigarette burns then glue the fibers in. --184.155.xx.xxx |

Wendy - Just an FYI - I had a tenant put a black throw rug over the carpet, and it left a terrible black stain. --75.36.xxx.xxx |

Put a sign in the window =Crummy Tenant wanted for crummy place= see if you can rent for 1 1/2 times the rent you used to get, save this money for resurfacing the floors below the carpet or kiss carpet goodbye with a laminate floor which does not require a truck mounted steamer to mop up spills. --68.76.xxx.xxx |

Thanks for most of your tips. I'm going to use the Rug Dr. first, then re-assess. I like the shaving and gluing rug fibers over the ciggie burns idea. Creative budget techniques are often the best choice. If these two steps fail, a large area rug will be my default. I'll let you know how things turn out. --71.172.xxx.xx |

For a small home, sometimes it's cheaper to replace the carpet. Sometimes the pad is ok. You'll spend alot in labor and time with carpet cleaning if it's really that bad. --184.215.x.xx |

Ted, Don't waste your money and time on a RugDoctor rental. For the same expense you can get a pro to to it right in a fraction of the time.
Carpet cleaning is all about suction. Pros use a prespray then rinse with clear water and SUPER suction.
It's really the suction that gets it clean by pulling out the dirt.
Get with your LL assoc and find a discount STEAM EXTRACTION pro. I pay mine $25 per room, min $60. They can do wonders for the same price as renting and dragging that red thing around for hours. DO NOT put any soap into the rug!! Right there, the RugDoc is wrong.
Throw rugs over carpet is popular.
Burns: depending on the type of carpet, you can rob some carpet from the closet and replace "plugs" - cut out 1"x1" and drop in a replacement plug. Search YouTube for instructions. --50.129.xxx.xxx |

I second not using the Rug Doctor. I need it once and would never do it again. Too much work and the carpet did not get as clean as the truck mounted carpet cleaners. Good luck. --65.214.xx.xx |

thanks for the tips. i tried rug dr.--got about 75% cleaner. perhaps hiring a suction rug cleaning co. would have done 100%. i'm exhausted from dragging rug dr.around. rental plus solution was under 50 bucks, which was a good deal, however... cigarette burn rug plug idea is brilliant. doing that after the rug dries completely --71.172.xxx.xx |
