State Specific Question About: MARYLAND (MD)

Is there some kind of annual/other maintenance needed for the outdoor AC box that sits at the side of my house and 'runs' when the AC is turned on? Seems like the guy who installed this said I was supposed to hose it out annually? Just want to be sure that will not hurt the unit?

Don't know how to check the freon and where to buy freon. I've never ever checked this! It has been here for nearly 10 years! --71.163.xxx.xx

Many HVAC companies are offering "summer cleaning" offers where they will come and clean the unit and check the freon for a relatively small cost.

Chances are good if the unit cools well and quickly the freon is probably OK . But with a Spring cleaning Special as described above the tech will check freon level as well. --108.236.xx.xxx

Clear away any vines, grass, leaves - anything that will block the airflow.

Shoot a water hose thru the fins to wash them. Might need to brush off any cottonwood, spider webs, leaves stuck in the fins.

The fins are delicate, so don't be rough and bend them. --50.129.xxx.xxx

Another - make sure the wires and copper tuning into the house are protected from mowers and weed eaters. --50.129.xxx.xxx

The idea is to hose backwards to force out what the air has drawn in, pull the power at the box on the side, remove the screws that hold on the top and gently flip the fan over, now you can see all the rubbish, scoop out what you can and hose out the rest, =the man= uses a foaming cleaner that pushes the dust/grass clippings out of the fins and then hoses everything out, you can do almost the same thing with the hose - it just takes a little longer to get all the stuff cleared off the outer surface so the air flow is maximized. --68.76.xxx.xxx

try to spray the unit from the inside twords the outside. Maybe go out after dark and shine a flashlight on it. if you cant see light coming thru all the fins then it may be clogged with dust/grass. You can buy a spray /wash at lowes that is the same stuff the AC guys use to clean the outside unit. BE CAREFUL it is pretty strong stuff and will cause a chemical burn if you get it on you --98.89.xx.xx
