State Specific Question About: FLORIDA (FL)
we have scheduled repair work during the day which will take up to 8 hours. It's electrical work so the power will be off. Our tenant wants to be reimbursed rent for the day she is inconvenienced. Is this normal? --71.199.xxx.xxx |

What type of work is being done on the property so that the electric wiould be turned off for 8 hours? Are the tenants going to be a work? How are you going to keep their food cold that is in the freezer and ref?
There is more information thats needs to be given before I could give you a honest answer. --98.82.xxx.xxx |

It is very unlikely that I would reimburse the Tenant for the inconvenience -- I would probably ON MY OWN INITIATIVE give the tenant a "sorry for the inconvenience" note and a $50 gift card to Olive Garden, but not if they badger me! I assume that the work will benefit the tenant.
@Rent101, if the fridge and freezer are not opened while the power is out, the food inside should keep for 8 hours.

Now may be a good time to invest $500 in a used generator. Most have a gas tank that will keep them running for 4 - 8 hours putting out enough power to run fridge, freezer, and overhead lights.
I don't compensate tenants like this one is wanting, but I also don't schedule work on a place that requires them to be elsewhere unless I have no other choice (i.e. emergency). --108.225.xxx.xxx |

The utility box needs to be replaced in a condo. It's probably more like 6 hours or less but we've purchased a new washer and dryer and have to relocate the plumbing and electric in the laundry closet. It is at their request that we get everything done in one day so they won't be inconvenienced. --71.199.xxx.xxx |

Is she usually home when the work is planned? If she is usually working during the day, it won't be an inconvenience for her at all. If she is usually home, maybe a gift card to the local movie theater would smooth things over.
Personally, I'd not give her anything at all. Things happen. In my area, power goes out all the time due to the weather. --216.229.xx.xxx |
