State Specific Question About: ILLINOIS (IL)

We have been abused by several building department inspectors do to what seems to be a personal vendetta. They falsified several reports claiming violations that did not exist. The last straw was we were found in contempt of court because we missed a scheduled meeting with them during a winter storm last February. It turns out per their boss the entire department was closed on that day! They went in front of the judge and lied.

How what a citizen & taxpayer file a complaint against these bureaucrats? Any ideas?? Who is responsible for them? --71.239.xx.xx

One is always better to belong to landlords association which as many can do more then a individual person. For building department they look at the rental housing providers which have deep pockets where they raise revenue by fines. For rental units there is only mimimum code which means a very low standard. For example if there is missing tile one only needs to put on a tile but does not have to match. There are listings of landlords associations on this site. Look in to belonging to a landlords assciation. The price of membership will quickly be offset by getting advise and going to trade shows. --74.220.xxx.xx

Check your local paper at the library for stories about the storm around that time. If it closed govt offices down, chances are the newspaper mentioned it if only in a little blurb. Probably wouldnt be online if it is that small. Might be online if part of a bigger story. --174.130.xxx.xxx

Get the court docket for the day in question, take to a news team - it seems you have posted some interesting questions here about your city, this makes me wonder how much time you spent learning the eviction process before you invested in this area? Joining a landlord group would be a quick way to learn some answers before the questions back you into a corner. --76.241.xxx.xxx

In NJ there is a state office (Consumer affairs) that regulates the local town/city building offices. I know a contractor who got the state involved a few times when he knew he was in the right, and the state came thru for him. The last thing a town inspector wants is complaints to the state, especially if it will make them look bad. --71.2.xxx.xxx

Yeah, tell me about it. The folks over there in my town have it in for me since I challenged one of them. He told me to get a fire place certified and when I paid the $150 bucks to do that, he laughed at me and said I didn't have to. I complained to him in front of the tenants and he said that I can have it easy with him or he can be very difficult depending on my attitude. Former police officer with two weeks training following another inspector around. Sounds like the folks in your town are tripping over themselves and don't know what they are doing. The plumbing inspector demanded to know from the heater installer where the high water valve was. Problem is that those are used in sewage plants, not home heating. You can try the mayor but see if you can find a local lawyer who owns some property. I'm sure he would like to help you kick some seats. I found the local one and if I have any more problems I am going to throw some money his way. The clerks in the local offices are usually someone's wife or mother who got fired from every other job for stupidity. --69.141.xxx.xxx

You need to figure out why they are targeting you and fix this problem. If you are in a rough area where you can't win, you should consider selling property. Sometimes it is bes to cut your losses. Or you can go to the extreme do appease them, spend thousands on the property to fix any problems that exist or could exist in the future. If they want to take you down, you will not be able to defeat them.

Regarding the contempt of court, surely this can be appealed however it will cost you $$$.

Just ridiculous. I feel for you.
