State Specific Question About: UTAH (UT)

I've found a great investment property with one issue--a strong cat/animal ordor. The owners are still living in the property. They have one cat w/2 boxes (located over carpet). I'm wondering what the odds are for removing the stench. I don't allow pets in my rentals, so I've not delt with this issue. Would love to add this house to my inventory--but I'm not sure what the pet rehab would take/cost. Please advise. --71.213.xx.xx

You remove the carpet and the pad and you paint the floor with KILZ Stain and Odor blocker. It's easy, really. And then you re-floor with laminate or Allure - no more carpet! --173.16.xx.xxx

What are the odds of just cleaning the carpets? If so, what would you use? --71.213.xx.xx

Others here have recommended Odorexit. Or have it professionally cleaned.

My own experience has been that once cat pee gets in the carpet and pad (and often the floor underneath), the smell will never be complete gone . . no matter how much you clean.

It will be especially noticeable on a warm humid day.

And, then, it's Gag City. --99.18.xx.xxx

If the cats have actually been going on the carpet...I would forget trying to clean it. But if the boxes are just on the carpet and they are just stinky and there is an occasional miss, you probably could get it cleaned. I would call a professional and discuss it with them because I've had lots of times that I've cleaned stinky carpets and think they look/smell good...then the first really hot day they start smelling again. --108.70.xxx.xxx

Check to make sure nothing is on the sheetrock and baseboards. Odorxit does work, but s/r is another story. My experience is to get rid of s/r and baseboards. I only used odorxit on concrete and studs. --70.171.xxx.xx

Have problems with pets (cats and dogs before). I removed carpet, cleaned theplace with soapy water with bleach, and installed tiles. --173.72.xx.xxx

Carpet and padding are the stink and stain magnets you can not fit in the washing machine, plus the stuff soaked into the floor - use a blacklight to show it glowing. --68.250.xxx.xx

Wendy is totally correct. We bought a 4-plex where one unit was HORRIBLE w/ cat and dog urine/feces. We removed all carpet and removed the baseboards, then painted it all with OIL-based Kilz. Smell was gone and has been gone for 5 years. --170.29.xxx.x
