What's your opinion of cheap tub surrounds?

Lowes sells an "AQUAGLASS ASPECT" for $47., that I'm considering for an older manufactured home with warped bathtub wall panels.

Thanks

It's all in the finishing details in my opinion. If it's properly sealed, no gaps, lays flat - who cares how much it costs? It's white and shiny and easy to clean. --173.16.xx.xxx

If the4 substrate is good that is the key to make the whole project work, Using sturdy cement board would be a good idea --99.103.xxx.xxx

Don't use the cheap one: they will break the "shelves". For $125 (still cheap) you can get the really heavy one that looks like tiles and never do it again. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Cement board and tile would be nice and long lasting. Two thoughts of repairs in my book:

1.go cheap now, cost a lot later OR

2.spend a little more time and money now, very little repairs later.

I prefer #2

Your cheap surround could haunt you sooner than you think...

Just replaced my cheap surrounds with tile. Not sure how old they were, but they were cracked. Blue is right, shelves and towel bars are weak points, and not repairable. We looked at fiberglass, but went with tile because the surrounds were an odd size. --72.231.xxx.xx

We don't mess with the cheap surrounds, unless

1. paint the existing. Use bonding primer and it will last for a while.

2. a temporary cover - use the fiberglass panels from Lowes, maybe just to pass a Sec8 inspection, knowing we'll be back later for a proper repair, usually between tenants.

3. We install new backerboard and waterproof tiles rather than plastic kits. The inexpensive kits crack and warp. Tile improves the value and Momma likes tile. --67.175.xx.xxx

I am using the $47 ones where tearing out the end is the most reasonable access to the plumbing. No broken shelves in three years. --69.136.xx.xx

What is behind the tub surround is going effect how long the tub surround will last. Often water proof drywall is used where water will eventually ruin the drywall. Either a cement board or tile board which does not absorb water. Tile looks better and will last much longer then a tub surround. --74.220.xxx.xxx

I like the cheap ones that don't have a lot of frills. They are glued on with liquid nails for surrounds. I can put one in in about 2 hours and replace it in about the same. I have some that last for years and years. Easy to clean. Compared to tile which is much more money and takes several days I don't see the advantage. Tile is very durable but also hard to repair especially with matching colors. I am currently working on a nasty moveout with a green tiled shower. I will do my best to fix up the tile. However, 2 tiles are loose around the shower fixture. If I can not get them secured so they look good and are water tight I will go over the tiles with the $40 surround. This tile repair will involve thinsetting the tile and grouting. Minimum of 2 trips if the subbase is good. --146.165.xx.xx

ditto on moisture-resistant drywall- lasted maybe a couple years.A big no-no: don't install a punching bag on other side of wall(back porch). the vibration loosened up the panels in no time. In my opinion, the cheap surrounds are alot like cheap shoes- you'll spend more money and hassle in the long run. --76.202.xxx.xx
