HELP!! Ok so my handyman set a humane trap and caught one squirrel in the attic of a rental property. And he closed up an exterior soffit hole. Another squirrel(s)shows up within days and eats through the exterior hole. I have already paid to have it fixed twice. He also put up moth balls and clorox. Now the squirrels are back and trying to get in an exterior hole near the electrical box.I feel I'm paying this guy and its not resolving the issue. I'm reluctant to hire a 'wildlife pro' but I'm starting to think it may be necessary to take care of this persistent problem once and for all. --71.75.xx.xxx

squirrels are just rats with a different name. I really cannot fathom why anyone would want to set out "humane" traps for them. you must pay your handyman by the hour....shoot them or poison them. your big problem will be chewed electrical. I'm not sure how humane I'd feel after my house burns down.......are you originally from CA (?).... --97.94.xxx.xxx

Last year, I had a HUGE problem with squirrels digging up my lawn, chewing my plants, and overtaking my yard.

Every morning and evening, I let my 60-lb husky in the yard. After chasing several of them, and finding/throwing away their food, they stopped causing havoc in my yards.

Long time ago, someone suggested putting moth balls and red pepper flakes everywhere to discourage them. Didn't work.

Then, someone said, to purchase animal (squirrel) repellent from Lowes. Didn't work.

Another suggested, shoot 'em. Just applied for a gun license.

Biggest deterrent? 60-lb husky that hates anything that comes into HIS yard disturbing HIS sleep.

BTW: My mother HAD a big problem with squirrels, possums/opossum, cats, raccoons, and other critters killing her plants and pooping throughout her yard/back porch. Someone suggested that she soak raw hotdogs in windshield wiper fluid for a few days before setting them outside. Worked like a charm. Killed lots of squirrels, possums/opossum, cats, and other critters. But, can't get rid of the raccoons. Any suggestions. --69.209.xx.xx

Read the thread 'Squirrel vs Vinyl' from March 7th. This batch will never give up trying to get inside your building, as pmh says, you must kill them to protect your property. --69.47.xx.xxx

If you are unable or unwilling to just plain kill these pests go to

They have guaranteed repellent and other means of controlling the pests --108.73.xx.xx

Tree rats. Use extreme prejudice. Humane? If it makes you feel better, make em into a nice gumbo after you shoot them. Tasty. --216.218.xx.xxx

Squirrels are NOT rats -- they are much tastier than rats!!

My recommendation: get a good ole boy from Tennessee, some sub-sonic 22s, and let him loose. Soon you'll be enjoying scrambled squirrel brains and eggs, a true delicacy. (Not that I've tried it, just that a friend from TN has bragged on how great it is.)

I had a OKIE Brother-in-law that killed anything that swam , crawled , flew or walked and had his wife cook it . One day they proudly presented us with Squirrel pot pie.It was one of the hardest things I have ever done to choke down a bite of that rodent. Later that night I had a fervent conversation with God asking that would he please keep me from getting some rare neurological wasting disease from eating that nasty rodent(LOL) It wasn't funny at the time. --108.73.xx.xx

Use tin from furnace leftovers to close those holes, besides the obvious electrical trouble with metal if you nail it into good wood it will outlast all the humane things money will buy, did you ever see a squirrel go thru a quanset hut? --76.241.xxx.xxx

we had awful problems a while back.we got an exterminator who used humane trap after fixing all holes.u cant legally kill them here.the exterminator finally fixed the problem and took captured ones a few miles away.he gave us a guarantee and had to come back several times.get a guarantee if u use exterminator.and get a guy with years of experience.tell the tennie to tell u early if they have this problem.our tennie waited till she had 4 inside the house.cut tree branches in yard to 20 ft from house or so.i would like to get a way to lube or block the wires going in but havent found a good way to do this yet.i dont want to electrocute myself doing this.cost me about a thou. the guy next door to me just paid someone 800 to fix his house. --173.14.xxx.xxx

Do not soak hot dogs in wiper fluid. When a neighbor's dog gets sick or a child picks one up and brings it home you could end up in prison where the poster who suggested this should be. --76.99.xxx.xxx

I use a strobe-type light called a squirrel evictor. It is pricey, but it works. Run it for a few days until there is no evidence of squirrels any more. Then close up the holes.

In one of the houses where I tend to have a problem, I keep it permanently flashing in the attic. The squirrels can't stand it, and neither can I. I have a switch to turn it off located right next to the entry door to the attic.

I actually have three of them. --195.93.xxx.x
