What is the least expensive way to refinishing a bathtub. I have one in a rental property that has some peeling spots. I don't want to spend $1000 to have it covered by RE-Bath. --68.12.xxx.xxx |

I had one done once, an antique clawfoot. Cost $350 and done by a local fellow.
Have you tried Google? "Oklahoma Bathtub Refinishing Companies"

THere are $30 kits at hd and lowes, some are spray on and some are roll or brush on. Have done both several times. Sometimes it lasts for me, sometimes it doesn't.
Sorry not much help. --71.251.xxx.xxx |

Used to be, before the EPA cracked down on paint chemicals, that professional tub glazing would be a viable solution for $250 - $350. However, the glazing paints available today are so emasculated to the point where they just won't hold up. Used to be they were guaranteed for 5 years against peeling in a rental. --98.108.xxx.xx |

Chech your phone book or google bathtub refinishing. I've had several done, some as far as 10 years back.
The key to their survival is the cleaning care they get. We take the care and cleaning sheet and clear tape cover it on the inside of the medicine cabinet. With each new resident we fully cover the sheet and inform them of the cost if not followed. So far so good. With that said I have done 2 more this year, cost is 175.00 by The Bathtub Man, a local mom and pop operation. --205.188.xxx.x |

One can buy a epoxy tub refinishing kit. The tub will have to sanded all the places where the paint is peeling. More then likely the tub was painted before. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

The cheap way is to DIY with the kit that others have already referenced.
The "trick" to getting it to work well is to prep WELL. If you acid-wash, wear a proper respirator, have plenty of ventilation and be VERY careful. And wear that respirator when you sand as well.
After the job is done, it will be beautiful. And the tenants will ruin it. Because no matter what you say, they will use Comet or Ajax or Brillo or .... They will not use Soft-Scrub exclusively. You hope that you can get a few years out of it, and then re-do it.

In my apartments that house 1 tenant per unit and the bathtubs aren't abused, a cheep $200 tub re-glazing can last years. In my low income apartments with 8 people per unit, the constant use, different soaps and shampoos wear on the glazed tubs and they always start to peel within the year. Even with the warantee, the tenants find it hard to live in the unit and wait for the tub to cure before use. For that reason on over-crowed units I re-bath the tub so it can be used the same day and I never have to worry about reglazing any more. --173.55.xxx.xxx |

I used the DIY kit last year on a rental (costs about $20). However, I'm looking at having it professionally done by place that advertises at my local REIA and guarantees it for 2yrs,which will cost about $250. This I think is a very good price.
I am not doing the DIY because it took me MANY hours of labor to do the prep work, and then after all that, it didn't hold up (tenant informed me the bottom of the tub was flaking). I was extra careful to make sure I did everything right. Additionally, the fumes are very toxic. I just don't want the headache (both literally and figuratively), and if someone else can do it all with a guarantee, I'll gladly pay them! --76.252.xx.xxx |

you might consider spot painting with appliance touch up paint, or rustoleum oil-based paint - both sold at Home Depot. Depending on the color you are matching, you should be able to get decent results this way for only a few dollars.

I'm 0 for 3 on the DIY kits... they suck. You'd be lucky to get a year out of it.... and a lot of aggrevation. This is a job for the pros. --75.6.x.xxx |

A few months ago I went to a hands on workshop hosted by our local Sherwin Williams store that caters to contractors and landlords. It was promoted at our local REIA. The product was Tile Doc by X-I-M. They claim that it is the toughest and most durable two part Epoxy acrylic modified tub re-glazing system. They have a special etching cream that is easy to use and not stinky. They also make a one part acrylic Epoxy modified product that is available in spray cans.

we can get them done for 260-280 here. IT lasts for years. The one from my old family inherited one lasted 20 years! No way I'm going to mess with this and also look like a amateur job when done. The last one that we had done looks like a brand new tub. It might be that cure time is critical. It was weeks before a new family moved in,in the last one we did. Saw it after nearly a year and it still looks brand new. --71.123.xxx.xxx |

To clarify, I was not planning to refinish tubs myself. For one thing, the equipment is quite expensive. I took the workshop so that I would understand the process in order to understand what a prospective contractor planned to do. --69.214.xxx.xxx |
