Probably not against the law, but for sure, not a good common sense idea. I once quit using one handyman after a female tenant complained to me about my handyman make indecent proposition toward her. --96.239.xxx.xxx

I agree with Irish. Common sense (not necessarily the law) is the main point here. What if the tenant has an child living in the unit or who came to visit or lived next door? I could see issues if anything happened and it came out that you KNEW the person was a sex offender. At the very least, I think you'd be obligated to let all tenants and neighbors know about the person's history so they could take whatever precautions they feel are appropriate. --75.33.xxx.xxx

It would depend on the offense, Peeing in the parking lot at the local bar vs molesting little kids ?? --99.151.xx.xx

Not wise to do. You should disclose to your tenants of this fact since you are aware if you do hire him.

You will lose some tenants. Plus many tenants will not trust you if they know you hired a person who is on the sex offender registry. Is he worth it?

It's not a good business practice IMO.

As the others have opined, it is probably not a violation of any law, but it would be a foolish risk for a LL to take.

Maybe I'd send a convicted sex offender into an empty HOUSE bweing rehabbed, but I would not send a convicted sex offender into an occupied house or into a multi-unit place. (I'll assume it was a real sex crime, not something like peeing in public or statutory rape of a 17 year old by her 18 year old boyfriend.) Handyman is working on a vacant apt, knocks on door of occupied unit, "Hi, I'm Steve, I work for Jena, as you know [because you've seen me working there] I'm doing some work next door in the vacant unit. I had to turn the power off in that unit, and if I could just run an extension cord over to the next door unit from your place for about 5 minutes, it would really help ...."

Tenant knows that Steve is an authorized worker, wants to be helpful -- after all, it isn't like letting a stranger in, obviously Jena the LL trusts Steve, ....

Opps!!

Thanks, but no thanks. If I hire a convicted sex offender without knowing it, well, I don't run a background check on every subcontractor or laborer I hire, but if I know, well, there are plenty of other workers just as skilled!

I agree, but this is over played.

We never know what they did, and let's be hones a few year ago homo life styles were looked done on, today it is OK, their excuse it is in the jeans, same as the sex offender..

Who knows what 50 years may bring. --67.163.xx.xxx

Against the law, no. Foolish business move-definitely. Why would you knowingly take a risk. If the offender were to harm one of your tenants and you knew he/she had a conviction of a sexual offense, you would probably be toast. Just say no. --74.45.xx.xx

Give us details. What was the offence? Was it pled down to the final charge?

I think it's not a good idea.

I hire ex-felons (drug violations) for rehab work (on unoccupied construction properties) because I believe in giving people a second chance.

It is not a good idea to have anyone with a record who may be inside or around tenants property. It leaves you open for liability.

As for the homosexual comment, at least please learn to spell before you lump a group of people in with sex offenders.

The fact is if you look at it the majority of sex offenders are heterosexual men. I can start by listing senators and preachers caught with escorts if you like. Thanks, end of rant. :) --76.87.xx.xx

Every person with internet likes to look up sex offenders. Someone will know very soon.

As far as which type of offense, the online lists give little info. Hysteria is not calmed by logic.

A fellow LL rented to the rehab agency which helps sex offenders as they re-enter society. The home was waaaaay out in the country with no one nearby. The newspaper found out and published a front page article naming him and his wife (a school teacher) as harboring sex offenders. --67.175.xx.xxx

Many who drive beer trucks are drunks, same for bar tenders....

Their was a time when booze was illegal, same as drugs, MJ will be legal one day...maybe...

Society beats up on sex offenders and drunks, I know drunks that just had too many one night, I have heard of sex offenders who dated a girl too young, both carry the stigma the rest of their lives.

When a guy says God Bless it's time for a pass..overly religious help scares me more.

90% of my workers are good people, the other 10% we make the best of a bad choice.... --67.163.xx.xxx

Why would you expose your tenants to a sex offender and take the chance he/she might reoffend one of your tenants? It's a HORRIBLE idea to hire this person and knowing that this person is a convicted sex offender put you liable for this person being around. --68.12.xxx.xxx
