Los Angeles now wants permits for free standing storage sheds. Also they want a $500 penality for not pulling the permit in the first place. If you complain, then they demand you hire an Engineer to draw up blueprints to show the shed can withstand an earthquake of 7.0 or greater.

Have anyone heard of a government agency requiring a building permit for a free standing wooden shed -- a temporary stucture on a plywood floor, not attached to the ground? Please let me know. Thanks --173.60.xx.xx

Here, sheds require cement ratwalls and floors. Permit is required.

One city allowed me to put up a Rubbermaid vinyl shed without a cement slab, but then changed the rules and now require them.

It's all about the all-mighty buck. --99.18.xx.xxx

Placentia in Orange County requires a permit if the shed is over 6 x 12. I put in a Tuff Shed after looking at 3 other companies.

L A needs the money to support the illegals. --72.25.xx.xx

Around here if there is no foundation then no permit is needed.

Mine are sitting on stone blocks or pressure treated wood.

I'm surprised there is someplace worse than New Jersey. --76.99.xxx.xx

One of my subs got nailed for this. Didn't need a permit for the shed but rather for the concrete floor and electrical. If he had just used gravel, dirt or even pier and post all would have been well. but nope he poured concrete. --75.44.xxx.xxx

Permit required only for structures larger than 120 sqft. No inspections or babysitting the construction of it.

We did a $25,000 remodel on a house earlier this year. Never even pulled a permit. New roof, new boiler, etc... --66.228.xxx.xxx

No permits required in this county or Towns therein . One of these days some Auslander will get up at a city council meeting and tell them "how it's done in ( Fill in the Blank) . And then like when the devil told Eve about the apple , it'll trouble from then on (LOL) --70.250.xxx.xxx

It always depends on the city, county , or township you are in. I live within an association and the ccr's require a permit for a shed. It's stupid but I guess they want to keep track of how many buildings you have and make sure you aren't living in your shed. You never know. --74.45.xx.xx

Thanks everyone for giving me your personal experiences dealing with shed permits. L.A. doesn't publish this information and everytime someone asks an inspector, we get different answers. --173.60.xx.xx

We are required to get a permit for any sheds & even approval from the "hysterical" commission for some parts of town.

If you erect an event tent there is a fee between $50.00 & $500.00 dollars depending upon the size of the tent. --72.85.xxx.xx

For a ~ 50 ft all wood garden tool shed, the town in Germany made me plant bushes around it so it would be shielded from view. The whole process took over 90 days, grrr. --64.12.xxx.xx

Hahaha, an engineer to draw up plans for a shed? You guys in Cali need to have a heart to heart talk with your lawmakers!! We can build storage sheds and pole barns up to 1,000 square feet without any permits or inspections. Sometimes living in the boondocks has its downside ,like not enough properties to invest in and few people moving into the area. On the other hand, we don't have to put up with such stringent laws and inspections. --70.44.xxx.xxx

Around here you need a $25 zoning permit for anysize shed, to make sure that you keep it out of setbacks.

If it's over 10x10 or 100 sq feet, you need a $50+ building permit & footing foundation.

Once you have a foundationed accessory structure (shed), it can now be added into your property tax assessment, so you'll have the honor of paying added taxes for it too! --76.6.xx.xxx
