State Specific Question About: MAINE (ME)

With a six family apartment kitchen remodeling project, I have to put in space saving 18 inch built in dishwashers, not a standard 24 inch, due to very small kitchen space constraints. All the brands recommend regular monthly cleaning of the food particles from the fine filters, as opposed to standard size dishwashers that have round slotted filters that wash through most food particles in the cycle.

Would you please give me your recommendation or experience, pro or con, with a manufacturer of 18 inch space saving dishwashers. I am looking to buy what is the best brand on the market in the $500 range. Thank you.

I strongly suggest that you rework your plan to find the space for a standard 24" DW. You will have to pay a premium for an 18" DW and the don't hold very much.

Sometimes when we are tight on space we install the DW with an 15" to 18" cabinet below it and a 30" cabinet above it. This gives you some extra storage plus makes using the DW a little easier while only costing you a little counter space. This is similar to having a built in oven with storage above & below it. --151.203.xxx.xxx

My tenants unit has a, 18" GE 1800 series. Been working fine for 5 years.

Holds casual dinner for 6 and a couple small pots, pans or side dishes. For a formal dinner (e.g. including bread and dessert plates, and cups and saucers), just the place settings.

This is only a two bedroom unit so tenant have been happy with it.

Haven't clear the filter yet. Off to put that on my to do list --66.3.xxx.x

I have installed 18" dishwashers in all of my units that never had dishwashers before--in good rental areas only. I always got Whirlspools because they make Kenmore, Insinkerator and Kitche Aid. Yes they tend to break down twice as often as a normal 24". The motor and or pump are always trouble sum. Now I stock extra parts otherwise it takes several days on order. --98.119.xxx.xx

I wouldn't put one in if I couldn't fit a standard size. For what they can do, they are too expensive. --66.136.xxx.xxx

If you are handy like RobertCA and myself you will find the solenoids and pump seals are the same for either size but the filter I do not know about, I will pay attention next time I work on a 18 - I have only had 3 or 4 in 100 units, the tenants like the bigger is better concept. --76.241.xxx.xxx

we have 18" in a 4 family we have -- they were there when we bought the place.. we replaced old w/ new ones..

if i had a choice -- i'd go w/ bigger..

18" kenmore was discontinued because they weren't a "hot" item...

in this case -- 18' is not the way to go if you don't have to! my 2 cents worth..
