I just took the course for renovation in the presence of lead paint.
I had my properties tested by a fellow who used an xray gun that looked through all the layers of paint in my buildings which are all built prior to 1960.
I got printouts of the percentages of lead in each wall, molding etc.
Fortunately, the only lead paint was on outside wood trim and two window sills inside and a set of garage steps.
I got certificates from the tester for all my buildings besides the printouts and they have been very useful to show to state and local inspectors.
Some lead testers use a kit that has chemicals in it that turn red if there is lead on walls or woodwork. A scratch is made into each surface and the chemical applied on a small pen. If red appears then there is lead. If the surface to be tested is colored red itself, then they take a paint chip and have it tested some other way.
To have work done you need to find contractors who have taken the course and can do the chemical test if you don't have all the buildings tested prior to repairs.
These certified contractors would provide plastic barriers to prevent lead dust from getting all over.
Hope this helps.
