Hi there-

I manage a complex that houses 288 college students which can be an absolute headache at times. Our most recent headache is EXCESSIVE amounts of litter around the property. Our maintenance staff spent three and half hours this past Friday cleaning up trash and came back over the weekend to find a parking lot full of fast food cups, bags, beer cans--our parking lot looked like a landfill! We've placed trash recipicals around the facility, but even that hasn't helped. We've placed a provision in our lease stating that anyone found littering on the facility will be fined, but catching them at 2-3am is another story. Any suggestions or ideas on solving our littering problems would be helpful! --67.60.xxx.xxx

Offer a reward to those individuals who can provide you with photos of the culprits. Everyone has a camera phone now a days. Pay out half the fine as a reward and you'll still be ahead of the game. --74.8.xx.x

Gosh, Shannon, that sounds like a nightmare -- basically like managing a large dorm building! I, too, think installing security cameras would be best. You could also send or post notices to each unit letting them know about the littering problem and that security cameras will be posted and anyone found littering will be fined. And the first person you catch, make an example out of them and do fine them as much as you are allowed. There`s no excuse for littering, esp. when there are trash cans nearby! --71.123.xxx.xxx
