State Specific Question About: NEW JERSEY (NJ)

I have an electric panel in a duplex that only has 110 Amps . I have a new elctric stove that would not work and the service tech said that I need 220 Amps.

My question is being that I have a C.O inspection scheduled for tomorrow, about what type of price range am I looking at for the upgrade and how long to do it?

I guess I have to postpone the C.O. inspection --67.98.xxx.xx

I think the electrician means that you just need to run a 220 volt plug to the stove not replace the entire service panel. --72.85.xxx.xxx

Every house has 240 Volts Ac coming into the house. There are three wires which are black, red and white. Between red and black there is 240 Volts Ac and between red, black and white there is 120 Volts Ac. A electric stove will draw no more then 60 amps so 100 amps is more then enough. A 200 amp panel is slighlty more then 100 amp panel. The apartment units have 60 amps which covers the entire apartment including the electric stove. If there is problem then one can install a gas stove and gas clothes dryer. --216.110.xxx.xx

I had an electric stove there before. I do not know why all of a sudden there is not enough power getting too the stove. I did put in a new plug also, but I have to see what type of plug it is, I did not know there were 110volt and 220volt plugs --67.98.xxx.xx

Yep there are 220V plugs and there different types of those. Maybe you just need a new pigtail ? Look at the plug blade pattern on your receptacle and the plug on the stove you are trying to install and see if they match . --70.250.xxx.xxx

At this point, I think you need clarification from your electrician on what he said.

The official voltages in the USA are 120 and 240 for single phase power in most residences. Prior to WWII and for a short time thereafter, some residences did have services at just 110 (120) volts. Usually they were just 30 amps and the panel had just two other fuses, each 15 amperes. Sufficient for lighting in each of the three or four rooms and porch(es)plus a refrigerator. I helped wire several such houses. --67.213.xx.x

Just got an electric water heater. It was simply a matter of adding a 220 breaker to the panel. The electric work, with running a wire cost $275. Problem is, this guy uses used breakers that he gets at other jobs.

He's good and smart and nice, he just has this quirk. Ticks me off bigtime. --76.99.xxx.xx

Maybe, well there are always a lot of maybe on electrical, test slowly and maybe a breaker that was working fine at another location would be fine for your load center, a replacement is probably cause something has burnt away from poor workmanship or faulty part/s. --66.72.xxx.xxx

New stove may be rated at higher amps than the existing stove circuit wire/breaker combo. But it would still be ok, just might trip the breaker often.

If the whole stove stopped working, I suggest checking the breaker. It's usually a double or oversized breaker, or fuses.

Many times one half or both sides of the breaker or fuse may be burned out and require replacement - a very simple process for someone who knows electricity.

OR, connections DO come loose - either in the breaker panel or the receptacle (socket).

None of this is for self-learning beginners but can be helped by an above average handyman.
