Can you reject a rental application based on possession charges 5 to 6 years ago? Thanks --75.139.xx.xxx |

Of course you can. You may not want to, however. What is the rest of their life like. If they were caught with a small amount of pot or Extacy I when they were a young person I might overlook it, expecially if they now have a responsable job. Lots of university aged people experiment when they are young and then get it together.

They are 19 and 21. Not sure what specific drug it was. I should have asked. He just said he had a possession charge 5 or 6 years ago, but wasn't sure of the exact time frame. --75.139.xx.xxx |

You go to the courthouse and read the docket and understand the actual charges that stuck - remember everything is legal till you get caught, then there is overwhelming evidence that is practically puncture proof in the courtroom, consider the rest of the story - what is the credit check showing for medical/school loans - read the report carefully as Kathi eluded to, utility shutoffs and evictions are a no-taker for me unless 10 years old. Clothing stores and cell phone bills grow very quickly so see how they do with those bills. --76.241.xxx.xxx |

The times are changing we're moving toward legalization right or wrong . Think about it this way in 1939 would you have denied a tenant who had been arrested for violating prohibition in 1932? California is discussing the total legalization of Pot for adults . It was on the news today. As California goes so goes the nation . --70.250.xxx.xxx |

I smoked the stuff until 1979. Yes, I did inhale. I got caught and have paid the price ever since in many varied ways.
I would never turn down someone for an old possession charge. I'd look at their current lifestyle indicators and go from there. 22 is still pretty young. You should be able to discern if they are still drug users. --141.129.x.xx |

we all did silly things at 15-16 and some of us got caught. if only possession 5 years ago I would suggest you consider giving them a shot. i would think they will now be more mature and intent on proving themselves as responsible now. --97.94.xxx.xxx |

Yes you can turn him down. When someone has 20 yrs behind them with no problems that is one thing. Five or six years ago that is a different issue. If you go to jail you should remember the exact time frame that you were in jail. You have to have the date of the arrest to check court records. At least in my jurisdiction you need to know the time frame.
I'd pass. --70.189.xx.xxx |
