State Specific Question About: WASHINGTON (WA)

Is it legal for us to ask a prospective tenant to provide a copy of their Social Security Card when they are applying for an apartment

Since soc sec number is required in order to do a credit check, I'd guess that it's leagal to ask for verification of that number.

BUT, I'm not an attorney. (Nor do I play one on TV. LOL)

I don't see why it would be illegal.

On the other hand, if you get their last pay stub, it will be on that. --99.18.xx.xxx

I ask for the number on the application. I ask to see their drivers license and verify the person filling out the form matches the name on the form. When I run a credit check it will come back and tell me if the number on the form does not match the name and birthday that were on the form and on the license. --208.94.xxx.xxx

I hear this all the time.

We are loaning them $12,000.00 if the rent is $1,000 per month, and are giving them access to a $100,000 property.

In order to turn on the utilities they will have to give it out, in order to apply for a checking account they had to give it out, so what is the big deal?

We need it when we run the credit check, and we also need it if they do not pay, or they can pay in advance, cash is nice.

In God we trust, other pay cash, --12.197.xx.xx

I do what Ellie says.

I ask for WA driver license or state ID card and take a picture or make a copy of it. Most people don't carry their SSN card. --98.247.xx.xxx

as far as being legal, I don't have a definitive answer for WA. Yes it is legal to ASK, but not sure if you can legally deny if they refuse to give this info. --98.247.xx.xxx

You can ask anything you want. I require a credit check which requires a SSN. No credit check no approval. --146.165.xx.xx

We require copies of their SS card, DL or State ID and proof of income for our files on all residents & occupants. Recommended by legal consultant of the SAAA. --64.148.xxx.xxx

we just get the number and the credit based on that.if its wrong we find out soon enough.might be a good idea to get their drivers license to see if the person in front of u is in fact the prospect they claim to be. --208.58.x.xx
