State Specific Question About: CONNECTICUT (CT)

Fellow CT LL's,

Just returned a security deposit to a tenant who moved out at the end of August. I sent a printout of the Excel spreadsheet accounting with the deductions and addition via certified mail with a bank check for the returned deposit.

Credited the accrued interest and deducted for unpaid utilities (water + sewage bills they hadn't had a chance to pay for roughly 2 quarters) and personal property left behind.

Former tenant received certified mail package and just asked me for receipts so they "can do what they need to do with them" (maybe tax write off?)?

What form does the receipt need to be in? Is it simply something along the lines of "receipt for deduction of security deposit for unpaid utility X"? Do I have to provide copies of the actual utility bills (water & sewage)?

Looking for some clarity.

Thank you in advance!

ask them for clarity.

I stopped trying to divine the thinking of tenants a long time ago.

If you've covered your bases (legally), ignore it.

Sounds as if they left you a ton of problems....not your place to be their servant now.

Your time is more valuable than that.

"can do what they need to do with them"

Most likely means sue you in small claims court if you don't provide the receipts for the utilities, etc. --71.12.xx.xxx

The only receipts I ever give them are the utility bills. All other expenses are itemized on the letter I send them. You do not have to provide anything else. If they want to challenge anything, they can take you to court. So unless you have grossly overcharged for items, I wouldn't worry about it. --98.179.xxx.xxx
