Jill, there is a sample rental application on this site, which you can use and have the applicant sign giving you authorization to run a credit check and check other references. A credit check will show mortgage history. Please keep in mind a credit check is just ONE of several steps that need to be done when screening new applicants. You need to VERIFY all info provided (that LL's listed really are LL's, employer, paystubs, previous addresses, etc), check income, search for public records/evictions, check criminal background in all counties/states they could have lived in, etc. You need to get positive LL references from at least TWO landlords as well.
