State Specific Question About: CONNECTICUT (CT)

My last tenant left some furniture in the unit, and personal belongings. He didn't show up to pick them up on the date he had told me. Fridge is full and food, etc.He moved to a condo.

I have his security deposit and am on good terms with him.

Any ideas on how to move him along on getting the stuff out in a nice direct manner?

He needs to take care of this stuff. I have done a lot already to move him along and don't want to deal with anymore babysitting.

I don't know CT law, but you should definitely check before you dispose of anything. Maybe a friendly call, "Hey I'm going to tote all your stuff to the storage unit and you're getting a bill for it if it's not picked up by xx-xx-2008". If not, read up on your LL / tenant law to get the best route. Maybe another CT LL will chime in. --204.80.xxx.xx

Has the lease been legally terminated or is rent paid to date (or beyond)? Be sure you handle any further communication in writing so that you have proof of contact made and what is discussed and agreed to. As sid (MO) mentioned, be sure to read through the landlord tenant laws that apply for the state/county/city where the property is located and see what legally applies to the situation, especially if property has potentially been abandoned and you are holding a security deposit. Follow the laws to the letter to protect yourself and to avoid legal problems. Let us know what you find out... --216.244.x.xxx

If the previous tenant gave you keys--- I would clean the stuff out. If no keys then would bring to a storage place pay one month and send cert letter. take cost of extra days and storage out of sec deposit. --69.118.xx.xx

I am going to contact him today and ask him to get the stuff out. He's been great in most ways, but really having some boats of depression having lost a job, etc.

All of which is not my problem. I am still trying to get the new address out of him. It's not much stuff and he needs to get it out regardless. I also don't have the keys. Just my own set.

He's been decent but if I don't push him he will just leave the stuff. Thanks for the good ideas! Will up date you all soon. --65.91.xxx.xxx
