Your credit will take a hit if you short change you LL on the way out, plus if he sues and wins (and he will) you will have a nice fat asset he can attach with his interest bearing judgement! --71.196.xx.xxx

The better question should me: how will you rationalize bettering your life and your situation by screwing your landlord over? You're going to do what you want to do, just be ready to accept the consequences.

The best way to get out of a contract is by mutual consent. Be a responsible person and tell your landlord the situation, and ask if he/she would be willing to terminate your contract. If yes, you will probably be responsible to pay rent and fees associated with re-renting (i.e. advertizing, utilities). If you choose to just leave without saying anything, your landlord has every right to sue you, wreak your credit, and when he/she wins against you in court, they will search public records to see if you own any real estate. They will then file a lien against your real estate for every penny you cost them (legal fees, loss of rent). Then if you do not pay, there will be interest added to the amount due each year. Somewhere down the road you or your heirs will attempt to sell, and the first person who gets paid will be your former landlord.

Do the right thing: pay up and start out this step in your life the honorable way. --168.166.xx.xx

I already live in Mo, but someone told me it was legal to move and break a lease if buying a house or "bettering" your living conditions. The friend who said it was legal doesn't remember where they saw it online but I can't find it. Personally, I think they are looking at the wrong state b/c Mo doesn't have any laws of such --71.86.xxx.xxx

in the state of mo you can get out of your lease only if it is stated in the lease that if you by a house you can cancelle the lease. other than that it is not legal to do so. some leases state that and others do not. but you need to speak with the landlord. --70.130.xxx.xxx
