State Specific Question About: NORTH CAROLINA (NC)

It is my understanding that I can win a judgement for past rent and damadges but NC is a state that doesn't attach wages. How can I collect?

Does the person own anything? Like a car, boat, other toys? I'm guessing they don't own a house...but you could put a lein on something they own. --167.6.xxx.xx

In my experience, collection on a judgment has been difficult. I just move on and don't even try to take the tenant to court on owed money. --149.168.xx.x

One can not get blood from a stone, if you rent to these type of people you can not expect to collect,

You need to re-exam your rental criteria and do not make the same mistake again --71.176.xxx.xx

While the ex-tenant may not be collectible now, (s)he might be in a few years. At that point, the judgment will have accrued interest and will be worth even more.

I have a few that I got against inherited tenants that had to be evicted that have been sitting in my file cabinet 7-8 years. I'll get around to checking up on them before the judgment expires. If any of them have become collectible by that point, they'll be in for a surprise...

In any case, getting a judgment against a tenant who owes you money could help a fellow landlord make a a more informed decision about renting to the person.

Deadbeats exist because they aren't held accountable. Show this person that there are repercussions for skipping out on financial obligations and damaging other peoples' property--even if it's just a ding on a record, it could mean the difference in whether he's approved for a new car or a loan at some point down the road. --71.126.xxx.xx

Over the past 15 years I have gotten enough judgments to wall paper my office. To date I think I have collected at most $500.00. I don't even waste my time trying to collect. I just make sure it's on there credit report and hope they clean things up in the future. --75.183.xx.xx

I'm sure Tyler can weigh in on this as it's in NC.

I'd be sure to report it using this sites service for reporting bad debts. Be sure to record it with your local county too.

While I've gotten several--one I did not go for but did report on this site--$2500. Evidently this tenant attempted to buy something or clean up credit to buy something so she contacted me. Made a deal for $2000 which she paid..

Now I've got about $15K more to go.. --65.12.xx.xx
