State Specific Question About: NORTH CAROLINA (NC)

What is the best approach to use to get tenants with poor housekeeping skills clean up their units? I have 2 that always pay rent early and don't seem to have any other problems. --74.242.xxx.xx

Is the poor housekeeping causing damage to the house? If it does not, I wouldn't get excited. You don't have to eat or sleep there. --199.20.x.x

I think my wife hit it on the head when she commented that most tenants see cleaning as an event rather than a process.

Its going to be hard to change that perception on the tenant's part. --76.217.xxx.xxx

Unless there's garbage laying about that will attract pests or if an exit is blocked by clutter, leave it alone. It's none of your business. --71.174.xxx.xxx

Mary, none of my tenants keep house like I'd like them too even my best ones.

I agree w/ the above posters--unless it causes damage to your property or is an eyesore on the outside thereby a reflection on you then there isn't much you can say.

I provide a pest control service and the guy will tell me if someone is not so clean as to cause problems. I will mention it to them--sometimes you just have say "clean it up". --65.12.xx.xxx

One of the first Mr. Landlord newsletters I read fourteen years ago said something about not judging people for their lifestyle. It said make sure you can discriminate between lifestyle and behavior that violates the lease. --76.99.xxx.xxx
