State Specific Question About: OREGON (OR)
Up here in the Pacific Northwest in my area we have been having a large Meth problem. I have had to evict several families due to this problem, and it appears that the most damged, and junk left behind are from these tenants.
How is this problem in your areas? --64.122.xxx.xx |

In two of the foreclosed properties we have bought, we found evidence of drugs. I figure this is why the homeowners lost their houses. They would rather feed their addiction than have a roof over their heads. Real shame. --205.188.xxx.xxx |

Meth is a pretty big problem in the outlying and rural areas around Seattle and Tacoma, WA. Some of our forests are thick like a jungle so it's easy to hide out there and cook meth and not be caught. It's easy and cheap for tenants to get meth. I don't think you can be a meth addict and live a very well-adjsuted life. Pretty soon your job or health or family will suffer, and it all comes crashing down. COPS tv show has some meth segments that are taped in Pierce county area(around Tacoma). I have evicted a meth addict tenant. He was crazy. These people lose their sense of right and wrong, and/or reality. It really does cook the brain.

Some Sheriff's departments have assembled mug shots of meth users in chronological order of their arrests over the last few years. The first shots are of "normal" looking people. Then the mental and physical deterioration shows in their later mug shots all the way up to "walking death". Scary stuff! Maybe a print out of these photos with a "this could be you" tag line..... --71.196.xx.xxx |

Tighten up your screening process. I had them running applicant after applicant at me trying to get one clean enough that I'd rent to them. Then the whole crowd would move in for the weeks it would take to get rid of them.
Eventually they have given up and moved to landlords who aren't as picky. Sorry if you were the target. --24.21.xx.xx |

I guess you are getting the problems we had some years ago. One area chases them out only to have them resurface elsewhere.
I heard on NPR recently that many drug persons were moving to smaller towns and rural areas, where law enforcement was less equipped to deal with them. --205.188.xxx.xxx |

They sell kits to test for drugs - I've considered using them on applicants. If nothing else, putting notice that you test applicants for drugs will weed out the methheads. I know one former meth head in San Diego - he was formerly a wellpaid airline machinist; when my dad hired him (at minimum wage) to build a wood shed over the outdoor washing machine, the machinist was unable to figure out how to cut plywood to measurements (he screwed up 3 sheets of plywood) - his brain was fried. My dad was wondering, when you fry your brain, can the druggie somehow realize he has ruined it? --75.15.xx.xxx |

I have ZERO sympathy for meth users. It was THEIR choice to do drugs, not yours or mine. They are a burden to our society and I highly doubt they can be successfully treated for their addiction. Let the cops go in with blazing guns to take care of a problem that affects everyone in our society.

My ex nieghbor ran a meth lab in the garage, the addicts and police are over there a lot, the old friends come around looking for him, sherrif moved him out and then they tear out the windows to get in the house and dig thru the leftover junk looking for something, all the rear windows are now plywood and a month ago someone stole the rear garage door prolly for scrap money to get high somewhere else. There was 18 propane tanks in the garbage that went out, when I saw that all my previous suspisions were answered, I knew he was doing something and having barbeques all day and nite, wasn't till the deputy told me about the cooking tanks that the pieces fit together. If you think you have them as tenants get the police in there to start putting the pressure on them cause when they have friends over the word will be out your spot is the place to be and you don't want the lingering effects. --76.241.xxx.xxx |

On the tail end of an ordeal that began in Sep-Oct 2007 and resulted in my having to call in local police to help get the meth-heads out. It worked, but my property ended up getting labeled as a meth lab. After 8 months of repeated testing, cleaning and interior demolition, which set me back $15,000, the Health Dept is sending me a "Fit For Use" letter this week. I estimate that it will take another $15,000 to make my "Fit For Use" property into "Fit For Rent" (it's clean, but completely gutted - no furnance, water heater, cabinets, appliances, carpet, padding or tack-strips). I've certainly learned a lot from the experience, so if you have any questions you'd like to ask me, I'm happy to share. I'm actually considering writing a book about the experience, to help recoup some of my costs, so please let me know if you know any good publishers. --75.71.xx.x |
