State Specific Question About: CONNECTICUT (CT)
TIA for answering my questions (I have a 2nd in a sep post). discovered a propane tank (the kind used for gas grills) in my outside garbage bin. Obviously discarded by my tenant. I called the Fire Dept and the dispatcher thought the tank absolutely should not be discarded in regular trash but checked w/his captian who advised me to contact City Hall for a positive answer. I will do that Monday morning.
Any opinions/anyone deal with this before. I did take the tank out and put note on it to discard properly and not in trash bin. Anything I do at this point is going to be taken as a tisk for tat issue by the tenant when he returns to the apt. --64.12.xxx.xx |

Drop the tank off at any place that sells refills to the public.

Put in on craigslist and get $10 for it. Or open the valve and let all the gas out and then put it in the trash, or even better recycle the metal. --99.163.xxx.xxx |

so I'm being petty in having the tenant be responsible for discarding it properly? Just FYI, I will bring it somewhere if I have to (ie, propane filling station) but its his tank and I thought he should be made responsible for it.
As far as releasing the gas, okay, but I believe its still a combustible container and according to a friend who is a volunteer firefighter (in addition to me contacting the local paid dept) it can't be put into a trash bin. --64.12.xxx.xxx |

If you know what tenant it belongs to hand it to them and tell them it can't go in your dumpster. Let them figure it out from there. --99.163.xxx.xxx |

Maybe you could get someone to steal it.
Many years ago I rented a house that had a lot of junk in the garage when I moved in. I slowly threw it out in the trash week by week. One thing I could not get rid of was an old, non-working lawn mower. The trash man wanted $35 to take it and my LL would not pay.
I did not want to pay to get rid of it, so I took the hose to it, shined it up and stuck it in the front yard with a for sale sign on it. A few nights later, someone stole it!! The one time in my life I got one over on the thieves.

An empty (really empty) propane tank is not hazardous, will not explode from gas fumes- because there are none. If the smell is gone, the gas is gone. However, a (former) gasoline tank should be considered to be explosive forever. --66.44.xxx.xxx |

I just practiced what I preached earlier. I dropped off an empty propane tank that I had no use for at a store that sells refilled tanks. It tokks less than 1 minute to unload it. Job den -

In Michigan the suppliers required to take them, but last I checked at a charge something like $15. No, the metal recyclers won't touch it...even if you can screw valve off. Propane tanks not dangerous. Some have been burned severely with incorrect filling practices. Small camping tanks such as those hand torch tanks o.k. to throw in garbage. Grill tanks must be taken to filling station or exchanged at tank exchange. Yes, they will take them with new tank fee if tank not the tri pointed handle type. --63.27.xxx.xxx |
