Bedbugs (by Scott [RI]) Posted on: Mar 24, 2008 11:03 AM Message:
I have a meticulously kept, clean apartment house filled with professionals. Never had any problems with bugs or anything remotely close before. Two wks ago, 5-year tenant emails me that she has bedbugs & she and fiancé had sprayed what their friend (owner of a pest control company) told her to. Supposedly same stuff the big companies use. She is only telling me because it is my house & I should know.
Two days later, she emails me that she threw all her bedroom furniture/curtains/ etc out and that when she went to get the apartment inspected professionally, they told her I needed to give them the ok to come in, and would I please call them. I called them & the guy said it would be $750 per apartment & that I should do all three apts because the bugs will spread to all three units if not done quickly. I informed the tenant I thought she should have it done professionally so the other two units don’t get them and that she should let the two other units know so they can be aware.
She emailed me back saying she was crying and “freaking out” because she doesn’t have 750. Before I have a chance to respond, she emails me again and says that her fiance said it is all under control and not to worry about it as he is spraying and they haven’t seen any more bugs. I told her I still think she should have it sprayed professionally but she assures me it is all good and they haven’t seen a bug in since spraying before and they are spraying now as we speak.
Today she emails me:
“Hi Scott
So we sprayed for bed bugs and really haven’t seen anything since. But I saw 2 this morning. I don’t know where they came from Scott and am really wondering if they came in when second floor moved in??? I have been going to the doctor’s since November.
John had never caught up with second floor guy to talk to him but I am going to wait around to see him. They had to have come from somewhere! I am spraying again tonight. But I am really really just uncomfortable being in my home right now and I don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend. John finally went back to work today and is going to freak out when he gets home. Have you any suggestions??
What do I do & what should my response be?
Thank you for your help.

Well I think that if you're sure it really is bedbugs, you'd better get rid of them. Because they do spread and they are tenacious. You need to figure out where they are coming from though, so they don't come back.
I have a friend whose father is in the pest control business. They had some kind of convention (of pest control types) at a very nice hotel in my town. Guess what?
Yep. Hotel was infested with bedbugs. $$$$ to clean up that place. 100's of rooms. All mattresses had to be replaced...
No point to that, just that I guess it can always be worse. --66.162.xx.xx |

Did these tenants have any recent travels and stayed in a hotel? You can pick up bedbugs easily this way or by putting luggage, coats, clothing, etc. on infested furniture. You still need to take care of this one way or another but they may have brought them back to their own place. Something to think about for the future. --96.224.xxx.xx |

actually Mike, we are always concerned a guest will bring bed bugs INTO our hotels.
then we have to strip the room, discard the bedding, and then seal & fumigate.
what Gen said about his friend's father doesn't surprise me - there are many unscrupulous pest companies.
bed bugs do not carry diseases, but of course they can be a problem causing itching.
interesting article in WSJ 3/20 in the Personal Journal section about bed bugs.
see if you can pull it up Scott. --71.11.xxx.xx |

There was an article in Mach 20 WSJ, Personal Journal, summarising recent progress how to get rid of bedbugs including heating, cooling rooms, CO2 spraying, or using a sniffing dog. You may be able to find the article in your city library.
The article, for example, referrs to a company Advanced K9 Detectives in Milford, Conn. which trains dogs to spot bedbugs. A homeowner was able to find bedbugs with help from a dog and has successfully gotten rid of them by spraying pesticides. --151.204.xx.xxx |

The first thing I would be doing is going over there and ask her to show you the bugs. See them for yourself. Also take a pest control guy YOU picked yourself and trust to go with you so he can identify the bug if any.
I had a young couple tell me once the saw a spider as big as their hand in the house. I grew up in that house and never saw any such thing. I also had been crawling all over the floors for the previous 2 months scrubbing, cleaning, new carpet.. no even the slightest tiny spider. ( WE don't have spiders here big as your hand.) So I went there and told her to show me. She couldn't, there was none. I don't know what her purpose was but think it was strange she never could provide proof of it or never claimed to see it again. I did call Orkin and had a guy come and go over every inch of the house and even he laughed at her claim. --74.236.xxx.xxx |

Last Nov I bought a house for my daughter and the entire house of furniture came with it. Because of the bedbug issue I was advised to take the matresses and box springs (2 of ea) OUT of the house and stand in the fresh air and sunshine. Bedbugs hate both. I also purchased spray especially meant to kill bedbugs I went thru 4 large (12 inches tall) spray bottles on those 4 pieces, turning them each day from side to side to get the sun. Also took down all draperies/curtains, washed and re hung.
My daughter has been in the house @ 5 months now and has never reported any problems/ signs/itching. --140.140.xx.x |
