State Specific Question About: DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (DC)

This is the 4th and last time I'm trying to get help. Using the search button with my name got nowhere. I can't find the "first post." The Q and A yielded nothing. How do I deal with a superb tenant who is afraid to call the police to complain about his noisy neighbors? He doesn't want to call the police because he thinks it would jeopardize his high security clearance. The condo president said he should ask the other neighbors if the noise bothers them and make a generalized complaint. What can I do? In DC, 85 decibels is against the law. --71.178.xxx.xx

The tenant calls you while the problem is occurring and you go over there and find the noise yourself and knock on the door and give a warning. You just happened to be there to check the heat, or the garbage or whatever. Have tools with you so that you do not implicate the good and fearful tenant. I have done this quite a few times and it works beautifully. --76.99.xxx.xx

Tell the tenant to grow some balls and knock on the door and ask them to keep it down.

Tell the tenant that when you call the police because someone is breaking the law, they don't come and arrest YOU, they come and stop the law breaking. Unless, of course, your tenant has another reason to be fearful of the police.

Or, buy the unit next door. It's a buyer's market, y'know? --68.8.xxx.xxx

I have read the posts that supposedly cannot now be found. Sounds as if part of the problem is the landlord. If the noisy neighbor is also a tenant of the landlord, lay down the law to them. If not one of your tenants, then tell your tenant to 1. Handle it, or 2. Move. --66.44.xxx.xx

i am assuming the noisy one is not your tenant.victim should call cops.i suspect he is hiding from police for some reason.maybe illegal?the reason he says is silly.top security clearance???maybe some other brave resident wants to drop the dime.in our hood the noisy one would get a citation quick if it was late and he refused to be quiet.u could go overthere some night to ck smoke detector and u could be the guy who calls cops. --208.58.x.xx

I did a search for "noisy" and found the other thread where people responded without any trouble:

bbs2.mrlandlord.com/display.php?id=13585963

I agree that one does appear to be missing though -- because even that one says that it is your second time posting. But, in any case, that is the one everyone answered in before this one.

Note that the same search found your THIRD time asking -- which also has replies too.

So, out of the FOUR times you posted this, there are answers in THREE of them, at least. :)

LOL I get search challenged some times at this site.

Some days it hangs forever......

In the archives I have less luck. It seems to skip what I am looking just to mess with my head.

Thank you all for such good advice. It's made me feel much better and elucidated choices. No, in answer to one question, I do not own the apartment next door, where the noisy neighbor lives. The special landlord tenant office in DC Superior Court requires people to visit them in person to get advice, not over the phone. I want to make sure there's no ramifications about tape recording. My tenant is worth the truble.. --71.191.xxx.xx
