Scott, you have no need to "inspect" and will cause needless tenant issues.
Instead, simply do maintenance. The furnace filters need changing. You may want to check the smoke alarms regularly. You get the idea. Things you would want to do anyway, and while you're in the unit, take a brief look around.

Say, these posts reminds me: LL didn't do before pictures of rental or walk-throu checklist (sigh). Tenant has threatened to "rip out all their improvements" (office remodel to corner of 40x60 shop behind house)when they vacate. (sigh) What's-a-LL-to-do?
How does one "inspect"/document/record the current status (w/tenant improvements) of the rental? How do you PRO-actively PRO-tecting your investment from holes-in-the-walls "gifts" left by disgruntled tetants!
