State Specific Question About: CONNECTICUT (CT)
I have some extra company in the ceiling. Squirrels. I just called a squirrel removal company and they want 175 just to come out and set the cages and evaluate, then they charge 75 p/squirrel, or a flat fee of 750 for a bunch of them.
Does anyone have any ideas if this is a good price or not?
There seem to be quite a few of them. For this amount, they are only removing them, they aren't sealing up the entry and only giving tips on what do to to seal the house.
The company is A-All Animal. If anyone else knows of another company, let me know.
I saw a few cages that can catch up to 20 of them, for 175. I could just buy and put out there. (self service option).

Find their entry point(s). The clang pots and pans next to the areea where the squirrels are nesting. Have a spotter outside to verify they run out. Once they are out, seal up the entry point(s). Seal them up very good otherwise the squirrels will chew around the blocks.

I found a 20 squirrel unit, I can place out there. But, I sure like the pots and pans suggestion, as, each morning I have been banging the ceiling and they run out.
Also, I left the 2 bathroom ceiling fans on, which are noisey for them. I turn them off then on again. It seems since the tenant left next door it's been quite and they've been more active.
Also, someone told me to get regular pest foggers, and fog the area, that will get them out, then do the patching of the entry point with a metal mesh. Anyone ever try this?
I can't see paying 1000, for someone to set cages out that I can do the same for a lot less. I have no problem relocating the squirrels 10 miles from home which is what the trappers do.

Google "squirrel evictor." It is a flashing strobe light that is expensive (about $300)but costs only about 2 cents a day for electricity (in my area). It works, although the first couple of days there may be increased squirrel activity. Wait a month or two to close up holes.
I put one in the attic of a property where the squirrels chewed even through metal that I used to cover holes.

It seems the problem increased when the tenant moved out. It is also mating season for them and the warmer weather has not helped. They never mentioned anything, and I only saw a couple running around and on top of my roof.
I didn't realize how bad it was until I was painting and could hear them in the ceiling. It was quiet at the rental since Dec, and that only enticed them more.
I like the idea of the gaurantee above. All the imput is helpful and I will use it when I negotiate with the trappers, if I use them. But, i've had some bad luck with contractors and want to be sure I get what I pay for, without the "add ons" they come up with. I want a flat fee and a gaurantee if I am going to pay a lot.

One of the sites that sells them now has two for $470. I actually put two in the property I was referring to - as it has two attics.
It really works.
However, I am bothered by strobe lights, so I have them plugged in so I can immediately shut them off when I enter an attic.
They are easy to install, if you have an electric receptacle source - that isn't easily accessible to tenants, who will unplug it.
My tenants where I had them did this, complaining this was running up their electric bill - and then they had a squirrel that came in. --64.12.xxx.xxx |

Not sure I am brave enough to do the, "Granny Clampett", but there are some great ideas here.
A few years back I had to deal with another pest problem, rats. they quoted me crazy pricing, pretty much I went to the hardware store and picked up some outdoor houses, and baits. This did the trick. I inspected the exerior, and plugged holes with the baits. and fixed any holes that they made.
Well, that time I saved 750, buy not hiring the exterminator. I haven't seen any since.
How I did it was with the poison's outdoor houses with baits, fix all holes, of entry, fill with steel wool or whatever it took. The whole thing probably cost me about 55.00.
Not sure I am brave enough to deal with a bunch of squirrels though. Due to size, and disease, etc.
I am going to try a few ideas this week and see how they go. Thanks to all for the links the ideas, and sharing the experiences.

Looks like there are many ways to deter the critters, Pepper/wax solutions, granules, mothballs, strobe lights. Some of the solutions are meant to keep them out of gardens. Also, when the squirrell's are in the roof soffit, it can be a challenge to get some of this stuff in. One of the roofs is flat so I have some access.
I will let everyone know how it works out.

I had the same problem and fixed it myself. I went up in the attic and they all left before I even got myself up there. I took a roll of chicken wire and a staple gun. I found where they were getting in (a dormer vent) and stapled chicken wire over the opening. Just for good measure, I wadded up a ball of chicken wire, stuffed it in the area and stapled another piece of chicken wire over that so they wouldn't even consider trying to chew through that mess, although air could still move through it fine. No more squirrels now for over 3 years. --71.63.xx.xxx |

Thanks Laura- I think I have a door into the crawlspace in my 2nd bedroom. I will see if I can scare them out somehow over the weekend, but the opening that they are getting into I will have to use a ladder, to put in the chicken wire. The other area, above the rental is further over. But, I am hoping the crawl space door would do the trick to give access so I can make noise. I am sure a commotion would get them out, and if I have found the entry point, and clog it up after the unwanted guests leave, that may solve it. The pest lights are about 250 for the cheapest one. I think that would work too, but not sure I can get the light up there in the far side of the roof. I will try the crawl space first. Are you sure they can't get through chicken wire? --65.119.xxx.xxx |

Buy an appropriately sized hav-a-hart trap or two, block off the entry point, set the traps with a dab of peanut butter and start catchin'. There won't be as many as you think and these traps are very effective.
"Just make sure" to carry them far, far away. They will return if you don't take them far enough away. --68.1.xx.xx |

I heard you need to go 10 miles away. The trappers said it's probably only a few of them also. I found some really good cages to catch them. One connects right to the soffit. It's a little more expensive, and can hold up to 12 squirrels. I also found the Have a heard.
I am going to order some supplies and try to shake them out. --65.119.xxx.xxx |

If you move them then release them they will starve to death. They gather then horde their food, your moving them from their food supply. Death by starvation is inhumane. It's better to trap them and send them into a watery grave by drowning. That price sounds a little high let your fingers do the walking thru the yellow pages and get some prices. --71.235.xxx.xx |

For $600 I will send you my best pair of squirrel killing cats to put in your attic for a day. They kill every squirrel around here and deliver them to my front door step.
Anyway, no they can't get through the chicken wire but if your worried there is a smaller mesh wire at the stores that sell fencing. You could even do the metal screen wire for a window screen. Just get the metal so they can't chew their way back in.
Those humane traps work great. I Caught a beautiful fox, 8 opposums and a few neighbors cats by accident. All were released miles from my house. The only thing with the traps is you have to transport the animal, lay down plastic under the cage... then you must be careful turning it loose so you don't get bit or attacked. --74.236.xxx.xxx |

The havahart live traps work great. Use peanut butter for bait.
If you are a member of PETA, carry them far away and release. If not, submerge the entire trap in a trashcan full of water for 5 minutes. Either method reduces the local squirrel population by one.
We caught over 400 squirrels in one year at my grandmother's house, using only one trap. Started out with 4 or 5 a day, and petered off to less than one a day towards the end.

Last night I left the bathroom exhaust fans on, I think it at least got the squirrels out of that area.
I will probably try the evictor first, and the Have a heart will go on the roof. So, I won't have to worry about the dog's getting in. My dog is 120 lbs. so he wouldn't fit luckily.
I found a really good trap that plugs into the soffit, it's a bit more costly though. There are all sorts of traps, but really, I like the evictor idea. It's the bright strobe light that rodents don't like.
I am going to also get some chicken wire for when they do leave, I will plug up the whole. --65.89.xx.xxx |
