State Specific Question About: MINNESOTA (MN)
Morning All,
Now that someone approached me with a scam, I am paranoid and wondering if my ads in the paper and Craig's should be a cell number instead of home number. My home number is non-published so they can't get the address.Typically I put call forwarding on my home number to my cell so I don't miss any calls. Opinions? --71.63.xxx.xxx |

I wouldn't worry about it. Your scammer, like all of them, only wanted your address in order to send you a bogus certified check. He doesn't want to track you down. Airfare from Nigeria would eat into his profits too much, and it would be harder to pull off the "Irish" angle.
These guys are not going to spend time chasing victims who ignore them. Even if it goes farther, when you drop it, they're gone. My father in law went so far as to get a check from one of these guys and when he was clued in to the scam, the scammer dropped it entirely after a few unanswered emails.
They run their scams on mass levels because it's so cheap (mostly email and one postal mail when they get a live one), but also safe for them. They'd give up both of those if they tried anything else. --67.161.xxx.xx |

use the number that you will answer. Many applicants dont leave messages nor will they call back. They want the info immediately or they will call the next add in the paper --24.107.xx.xx |

Whatever you do, you should have a home number that is private and not used anywhere in your rental business. You want a number that when it rings you know it is friends or family. Aside from that you need a number for your business. It can be a 2nd number in your home or a cell or whatever works. --76.19.xx.xxx |

A REAL LL is on call 24/7 therefore the tenants need access to me at any time so I always give newspapers, tenants, and anyone involved my home(office) and cell #.
They're my houses and by them not being able to get a hold of me could cost me whether it's crime, water, electric, fire, etc.
I love my family but I can love them tomorrow and tomorrow might be too late if there's an emergency at the rentals. --74.194.xxx.x |

I don't give out my home number...I find it better to just give out the number to RED's house 678.555.Roll (Short for car door rolling over my head..almost).
I give out my free incoming cell number with no answering machine features.
The beauty of a Craig's add is that if you don't give out your number, you remain anonymous. When the incoming mail has their number you can contact them only if you please. First round of screening.
My thought is that you can use advertising in two ways. I prefer to be selective because I have too many applicants. Meanwhile, if I had few leads, not only would I be advertising RED's numbers but all of mine as well.

Wow. Lots of different opinions on this.It would be nice to leave phone number off craig's list and then call them but like an earlier post said, they will just go on to the next ad unless they are hot to trot on my property. I get about 3 calls a week from Criags.I am in upper class neighborhood but I keep the rent in the low 600s for a 1 br. I am 25 miles out of the main city so only certain people would want to live here. I am trying to attract those that live out near here by advertising in local paper(have gotten 2 calls in 2 months) so craigs has brought more calls and 4 visits all of them that say, "this is great, I have a couple more to look at". I know well enough that if someone wants it, they will take it right then and there. So far that has been 2 men with prior convictions that want it 'right now'. Yea right...I don't need the money that bad.
I sure am babbling this morning. sorry all...5 cups of coffee --71.63.xxx.xxx |

Me? I live in an idylic world. I expect good things--and for most part, good things are what I've gotten. For over 50 years I've put home phone number in ads. I had one ad on Craig's list. There I used my email address.
My line goes, "I expect good things, but I don't play in traffic." ie I lock my car and house doors and generally don't do stupid things. --205.188.xxx.xxx |

Typed up a long response, but it went to "profanity post" land. Not sure what I said.
Anyway, I only give out the cell number. My home number is for family and freinds only. In fact, most of them call me on my cell as nobody answere the phone at home unless it's grandma's number on the caller ID. I don't want any deadbeats calling my house and getting my wife or young children on the phone. I insulate them from my rental and work life as much as I can in this small town.
On your cell phone, save undesirable callers with the last name of "No", and the first name a note as to how you will remember them. That way when the phone rings you can look at it and see you don't want to talk to them. Another poster on here gave me this idea, and they even customized the ring tone to "none" for all their NO callers. That way they weren't even bothered at all.
Don't use the local paper at all. I use word of mouth and craigs list. Let your local real estate agents know you have a vacancy, they refer lots of people to me. Screen as usual though, lots of deadbeats call agents looking for a place to live. --71.55.xxx.xxx |

thanks John. I knew about the cell ringer going to none so it won't even ring for them but thanks for the 1st name/No so I would recognize them.
I googled my cell and home number and much to my amazement it showed my email address, the ad in craigs and my name. I am shocked as I have home phone number that is non pub. scarey. --71.63.xxx.xxx |

I run a business. My home stuff has nothing to do with it. Keep it that way.
You can easily get cheap phone lines from vonage or other VOIP services. I have a fax line that comes into the office this way. --24.21.xx.xx |

I have a separate (incoming only) line that goes to an answering on my desk. There's no phone attached to it. The outgoing message provides details about the vacancy before prompting the caller to leave name/number/etc.
When I call back and get their answering machine, I give my cell phone number. I also give them that number if they want to set up an appointment to see the place--they get the number so that they can confirm the appointment 30 mins beforehand (no call...I make other plans).
Like Nancy, rejected applicants' numbers get saved to the name "No" in my cell phone's address book to I don't make the mistake of answering it. --71.126.xxx.xxx |

a few back about not putting your email or phone number on craigs list. I ask for their info, and that way I can call them at a time that is convienent for me and not when Im in traffic or some other inconvienent time.
You also stop the calls once the house is rented. --68.106.xx.xxx |

Cell. My home number is basic, no caller ID, and besides, it's my HOME number. I always have the cell, and I charge it off on my taxes every year. So, all the tenants get the number, and all the ads get the number. Cell has caller ID and a better memory than my landline. --216.218.xxx.xxx |
