State Specific Question About: RHODE ISLAND (RI)

What is the maximum/minimum to have the heat set at for the tenant? --66.210.xxx.xxx

The law in NH says the minimum the heat can be is 65 degrees. Don't think I could keep many tenants if I only heated to that. I like to keep it between 68 and 70. I think that is fair and I calculate the rent amt. to cover that cost. Older tenants need it a little warmer. --65.175.xxx.xx

Not sure if its state specific, but it should be 68 degrees in the unit. And that is measured by a thermostat 5 feet above the floor on an interior wall. --166.68.xxx.xxx

You would have to check your local housing codes and ordinances to see if the requirement is higher in your city/town, but RI LL/T law requires a minimum of 68 degrees.

According the the Rhose Island Landlord Tenant Handbook:

He or she is also obligated to provide hot and cold running water at all times and must provide heat (68 degrees minimum but it may be higher under some local ordinances) between October 1st and May 1st, except when heat or hot water are generated by an installation controlled solely by the tenant and supplied directly by a public utility connection. --76.231.xxx.xxx

The temperature of the rental unit usually is determined by the city or town the apartment building is located in. Cities and towns have municipal bylaws which vary from place to place. In the town where the apartment building is located in the local municipal bylaw requires a ambient room temperature of 21 degrees celsius or 70 degrees fahrenheit imperial which is no longer used. Some towns allow a lower temperature at night where other towns require a constant room temperature. Go down to the city or town hall to view the local bylaws. --216.209.xxx.xxx
